Does anyone take Ambien vs Zolpidem and is there a difference (aside from financial)?

The only possible distinction between them might come from variances in actual content/dosage of the active ingredient (which is the zoplidem) from pill-to-pill if quality control is a bit spotty, either brand. I know next to nothing about such sleep aids, but the citations says it's all zoplidem, and between brand variances in effectiveness could reasonably only come from actual percentages in the individual tablets...in my opinion.

I’m asking if anyone has actually experienced the difference, not what the press says. Generic drugs are always hyped as being exact copies of their brands but it often just ain’t so.

The fillers are often different, which can occasionally change effectiveness. I have taken the brand and the generic and haven’t noticed a difference

Thank you. That’s exactly the info I was looking for. I had always heard that brand Ambien is much more effective than Zolpediem but I didn’t particularly want to spend the money to find out. In general, if I can afford it, I always get the brand version of any drug I am prescribed. For example Synthroid rather than Levothyroxine at the advice of my endocrinologist.

I try to avoid generic brand pharmaceuticals as I do not believe they are the same nor have the effects of the intended brand name. The basic "drug" may be there but the fillers may be different thus altering the Brand drug itself.......so there is a difference.

I totally agree. But sometimes the cost is prohibitive.
And many of the generics are manufactured abroad in countries where the quality control is poor.

I think zolpidem isn’t as effective as ambien. I’ve taken both for twenty years.

@zilla synthroid, I think of as being the exception to the rule. I generally prefer generics except synthroid

Why did you alternate? Was it cost or availability? Did your insurance ever pay? I’m really dying to try the Brand but $650 is way more than I can justify. Unless the Brand is twice as good. Then maybe I could split them.

I started out with ambien and then switch to zolpidem. Ambien was too expensive. With my prescription insurance zolpidem comes to ,$1.85 a month. Even if ambien is twice as good I can’t afford it.
