Stopping Digoxin?

Posted by lindabuza @lindabuza, Dec 26, 2025

Does anyone know if you can stop digoxin “Cold Turkey”? I’m starting a chemo drug on Monday that interacts with the digoxin I’ve been taking for the last 6 months. My oncologist said, at my Christmas Eve appointment, to stop the digoxin and call my cardiologist for information on that. With the holidays, I haven’t been able to reach anyone to ask! And, I can’t find anything definitive on line….

Hi @lindabuza
FIrst of all, this is a lot to deal with. A pause here…….to find a moment to just rest. I am glad you posted. You can do this!

I am not familiar with digoxin but did find information about it, specifically to your question it states, “ Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. Stopping suddenly may cause a serious change in heart function”. Here is the full information:
- Mayo Clinic about digoxin: https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/digoxin-oral-route/description/drg-20072646

You don’t mention why you take this drug. I read that digoxin is used to treat heart failure and AFIB, maybe other conditions. Also, others may know better how to comment if they understand a bit more about your situation.

If you are comfortable, would you share more about your health? And, how are feeling?

I have Afib. Taking Eliquis and Metropolol wasn’t quite keeping my heart rate under control, but adding the digoxin really helped. No more heart rate readings near 200 over a period of 24 hours.
