Have any of you noticed getting insomnia while tapering off prednisone

Posted by lindaadele @lindaadele, Dec 23, 2025

I have been tapering off prednisone very slowly for many weeks and I noticed that when I’m sleeping I will get up quite often and not be able to fall back to sleep again which is really very frustrating for me!!! any help you can give me would be much appreciated!!!

A steroid will do that to you. I was on a small amount due to loss of taste and smell due to Covid and I used it in a nasal rinse, a small amount. On like day 4 of using it, I had 2 or 3 bad nights where I didn’t sleep at all!😴

Sounds familiar. Usually, when I wake up in the middle of the night, it’s a call to go to the bathroom. And I do have a hard time getting back to sleep. I put the TV on at a very low setting for volume. Normally, it’s murder. She wrote and I fall asleep within a few minutes.. I was told to try the radio, but I told him no because if I’m listening to music, then I will listen for the drums and things to come into a song for me murder. She works the best.
I hope you could figure something out. That’s what works for me. Have a good.

Look up Mark Grant MA. He is a psychologist who wrote a book entitled Change Your Brain, Change your Pain. He has made recordings using sounds for bilateral stimulation of the brain based on EMDR( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) . This has been around quite awhile. He has recordings for pain, anxiety and sleep. Many therapists recommend this for relaxation and help with these challenges. The one for pain also works for anxiety and can be helpful for getting or staying asleep. Good luck!

@lkirnbauer, I also had a steroid injection in my neck and I had 3 nights with insomnia. It was long 3 days but the 4th night I slept well. Instructions from my Dr said that was one of the things that can happen with steroid injection. I also had a few days of fluid retention from the steroid. Things are getting back to normal now. I need to remember that when I have further pain injections.

@barbarasolinski Steroids are great for inflammation, but they can also do some damage to your bones, especially if you have osteoarthritis. The water retention/body inflammation, is a side effect of the steroid, but steroids shouldn’t be used long term.

It is a side effect of the medication. I take Melatonin and that helps me sleep with the steroid, I use a small dosage- 3 mg. That might help you sleep better. It is very frustrating, I know I am on a steroid right now!

Hi. I've been on high dose steroids and high dose immune suppressants for auto immune encephalitis for 18 months now. I have tried repeatedly to reduce the steroids but slipped back cognitively each time. I am now taking LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone) which has helped enormously and has normalised my sleep patterns as an unexpected bonus. I am now steadily reducing the steroids which is huge for me. Also recommend not just exercise but fresh air. I walk outside up to 2 hours every day (3 separate walks) and find it invaluable.
Good luck.
