@contentandwell That is interesting, JK. Have you asked your transplant team about that possibility? Teresa

@contentandwell, I never even asked about the possible medication connection, I just assumed it. And the dermatologist was not concerned, except to suggest the biotin (which also really helped my thinning hair-after the transplant).
JK, It looks to me like we are all helping you to formulate your list of additional questions for your surgeon at your annual visit:-)
We are all in this together!

My hair dresser has suggested biotin for thin hair (something I have always had but worse as I get older - and maybe related to poor kidney function but I doubt it. Instead I found another hairstyle that works for me because I was afraid to use the biotin with poor kidney function, although I never asked my nephrologist if I could take it. I suspect he would say no because he is very cautious and doesn't even want me taking Tylenol unless absolutely necessary.

@lcamino, You are smart to be cautious. I think that you are dealing with bigger issues now than hair thinning! Do you know if thinning hair is a symptom of poor kidney function?
I was limited in taking Tylenol, too. Now it is still limited, though I can use it if needed as long as I stay under the daily recommended dose. That is only because my liver is doing well.

@rosemarya - No idea if kidney failure causes thinning hair. I never thought of it until this discussion. I have always had fine hair and knew thinning hair was a part of aging for some so I never really questioned it. A very quick search tells me that I could have nail and hair issues if I was on dialysis so that means my kidneys were not doing their job/keeping everything balanced and filtering waste. Although my kidney function is still poor they are working enough that my labs, other than poor kidney function, are fine (mineral levels good etc.). The search also said age, stress, and hereditary can cause thinning hair and I think at this moment all of the three probably apply to me ; - )

@lcamino, it doesn't hurt to ask. At my liver transplant center they said it was fine, in fact they recommended it.

@rosemarya Is tylenol the only pain reliever you can take now too? It is for me, up to 2000 mg a day. So odd, that tylenol can cause liver problems but then you can use it and not aspirin or ibuprofen. Tylenol does little but I do use it some nights at bedtime if my legs are killing me from exercise.
JK

@contentandwell, Yes, tylenol is the only pain reliever that I can take. I feel fortunate because I do not have a need for it very often. When I do take it, I do so very sparingly. So, I do not even know the approved daily amount in mgs. - just that I should not exceed daily recommendation.
Also, only the plain regular kind is approved, and not the combination treatment kind.
Rosemary

@rosemarya Rosemary, I am not even familiar with the combination kind. I just know 2000 max per day. I also do not take much, probably an average of once a week for muscle pains in my legs. I used to have terrible migraines and although the pain relievers didn't help a whole lot they did help a tiny bit. I am so glad I do not have those now. Thank you menopause.
JK

@contentandwell, I'm sorry for the confusion. I was referring to products like Tylenol PM, Tylenol sinus. Tylenol flu etc.
Rosemary

@rosemarya Gotcha. I never even thought of those because I have never used them. I hate taking as many prescriptions as I do.
