Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I have had severe constipation all of my life. A CT scan revealed a tortious colon. I have both twists and folds, making it very difficult for food to pass through the gut, leading to constipation. I am to the point where I believe that if I eat several pieces of toast, and then otherwise eat lots of the right foods, I will still have a major problem because the mass of bread reaches a twist in my colon and blocks anything else behind it, despite if those are the right foods. (This is just my impression, about my condition.) I have had to use enemas in order to function (for decades). Anyway, I wrote on the tortious colon blog that I've discovered (for me, anyway) that insoluble fiber helps more than soluble fiber. (There's a book on amazon called IBS-IBD Fiber Charts, if you want to explore this. Its the only resource I've found so far that lists the sources of soluable and insoluble fiber.) Now that we're in the Holiday season, I've been eating very small pieces of fruitcake (1/2 inch slice) every day. Suddenly it was like I had never had a problem at all. No enemas. Everything normal. We ran out of fruitcake, and I was back to my miserable existence again. (The fruitcake I like is Deluxe Fruitcake, from Corsicana, Texas, and available on Amazon...just FYI.) Anyway, its mostly pecans, candied cherries and pineapple, and dates. I looked those up. All are around 75-80% insoluable fiber. So my theory continues about fiber. Anyway, I hope you find something that will help you. I understand that tortious colon can be from birth (which then is called a redundant colon), but can also just develop sometime later. Hope you find some relief. Its wonderful when you finally get there!

@cuddlebug I have twisted colon too. The GI had to lean on my abdomen hard during a colonoscopy to push through. I found bruise marks after.
So I just bought fruitcake and olive oil on Amazon. I hate fruitcake but am willing to try it. thanks

I suffer severe constipation due an abdominal wall injury which was small, so im assuming my constipation is due a lot of adhesions. Im going to tell you what helps me ENORMOUSLY but you need to decide for yourself .
A friend happened to rent a house that had a waterhose attached to the toilet and knew i was having severe issues. Small amounts of fecal matter which are to small to pass naturally would bloat me/ causing severe pain in my colon. I was using 100 suppositories every 3 days or so.
I bought the water hose and literally cannot live without it. My Dr says be careful not to overuse it ( which I do, no choice really) because the spincter will get lazy. I accept the consequences, I often cant even pass gas without the hose.
I found EVERY prescribed medication for constipation bloated me so use Zahler Magnesium Citrate. 2 pills every night, (i find this brand gentle on system ) because im on opiods unfortunately. This along with the hose helps me tremendously. But pls discuss pro/ cons with your Dr. For me, it's a life saver. I get horrendous pain from gas and bloating. Hopes this helps.

@cuddlebug Oh wow, im going to try the Fruit cake. Im from UK, we love fruitcake!!
I got a tortuous colon after my abdominal injury was left untreated for 6 years and ruined the way my colon works/ or doesn't work. My colon is also very painful now, so cannot strain it at all. Im going to get the Amazon book.
Thank you everyone on this site. More info than I ever get from a Dr !!

I’ve had severe constipation for 39 years and found a Dr in my city that prescribes the Vibrant Capsule. I should get it on CX eve. It’s a vibrating pill that gets turned on by putting it into a special pill pod then you take the pill every night 5 days out of seven. It’s med free, causing vibrations to stimulate normal peristalsis the normal movement in your intestines. Presently I’m on Linzess and Mag citrate and miralax and it has gradually stopped working. I’m active, drink water, eat healthy and take no drugs so we will see! Of course I just got approval to get my Linzess for free through Abbvie . I’ll still take it and wean off if things go well. Vibrant is 89 dollars out of pocket per month. I’ll check back and give updates! I’m 65 and I’m praying that they will have a program eventually to help with the cost. Like y’all I’m so tired of living like this. Draw back if you need an MRI you can’t and have to let the pills pass in your BM which may take awhile so I’m thinking in an emergency you’d have to take a lot of laxatives and enemas to clear you. There may be special MRI’S that you could do????? Like I mentioned earlier I’ll give updates on whether it works or not.

@jkoc2612 question- is loading up on fiber the best thing when you are backed up ? There are 2 basic kinds- soluble and insoluble—I’ve heard that soluble may be a bit easier on the body..personally, i eat fiber, but gently, and use colace to soften things up, which avoids straining…usually helps me….

I looked up Jaloma Olive Oil and it states it is non-edible and not to be ingested.

I would research this further with a medical doctor before taking this internally.

I'm not familiar with bidets at all; do you mind saying which brand waterhose it is you're using on your toilet? Thanks.

@h8bigbiz its not exactly a bidet. Its a simple water hose gadget ( about $40) that fits onto toilet tank, but this does mean you are inserting small amounts of water into you colon. That's why you must check with Dr. I was a little unnerved by this to start with but its so simple to use and my relief was so enormous, the straining would have me in pain for many hours....and my partner 's Dr told him last week he has one himself!!!
My partner knows more than I...i'll respond better when he gets back. At least its a small investment to see if it helps. When I have to go to hospital I literally freak out cuz no hose, for me it saves soooo much pain. I have 2...one is better than the other...get back to you shortly re which brand is better.
PS I just googled it...you are correct it is called a bidet.
