This and That and Talk - My Transplant

@rosemarya

Are you a transplant patient or recipient? Have you had to deal with weight issues pre or post transplant?

Myself, I was wearing x-large sweat suits pre transplant due to ascites. And post transplant I could wear regular clothes in a small size. Now I have migrated back to my 'normal' medium size. For me it is a constant struggle to maintain that weight. I am a liver/kidney recipient, but I think that this issue relates to all of us. Sound familiar to anyone?

@davidgenebarnes You are sounding better with every post. Keep the good news coming!

@rosemarya good article. I was fortunate in that I didn't gain too many extra pounds after transplant but it was a battle.

Last week while in the hospital for two days with my TKR I gained 10 pounds! I realize there is a lot of fluid retention in that number but that does not account for all of it so I am trying to fight this battle again.

I am trying to do the recommended exercises but one of them has me hurting so badly that I need to drop it for a couple of days. So far I am struggling with this recuperation more than I did with my transplant recuperation. I really hurt and the meds have me exhausted.

Hi JK,

It is good to hear from you. I'm glad that you TKR is over now. I have heard that the pain can be awful - but soon you will be on the other side. Take it easy as you exercise and keep in touch with your doctor.

By the way, how was your trip to Hawaii?

Teresa

@contentandwell - Jane, It is good to hear from you. You constantly amaze me with your determination to give your all! Please, take care to not over do it.
Rosemary

@hopeful33250 Teresa, Hawaii was incredible. My husband went from not being thrilled with going, to wanting to spend a winter month there! It has a very expensive cost of living though.
The landscape is so lush and so different from what we are used to, we really took advantage of seeing it all, including a helicopter ride! I doubt we will ever go back but hope we will manage to some day.
For some odd reason every time I go through one of those scanners I get pulled aside to be frisked! That was a nuisance. I can't imagine what was causing it. I saw the "hot spots" but there was nothing that should have caused that. The last time was especially intrusive, so at that point I felt like I would never fly again.
Spending 5 of the days with our son and his "southern belle" girlfriend made it even more special.
JK

@rosemarya Rosemary, I have learned the lesson the hard way. I did not do any exercises today. The PT will be here tomorrow so I will speak to him about it. I just did not want to not get full flex in this knee so I figured more would be better. :-(. I am horribly bruised and swollen too. More bruises appear daily. I sure hope the end result will be good.
JK

@contentandwell - Glad to hear all is well since your knee replacement. I'm sorry to hear that you are in so much pain but I have heard that from other people as well. Not that that makes it any easier but at least I don't think it is terribly unusual. Months down the road the people I know who have had hip and knees replaced have been so thankful they had the surgery. For my father-in-law, once his rehab was done, it was the first time I saw him walk without limping. You have proven that you are resilient so I have confidence you will rehab well and be please in the long run. Hang in there!

@contentandwell - My husband and I can't get enough of Hawaii. The beauty, and variety of environment, is one thing but the laid back atmosphere and slower pace of life is what really brings us back. We were going to live there for 5 years or so at the beginning of my husband's retirement which was also supposed to be before my transplant. Now that I will be getting a transplant before he retires it really isn't in the plans anymore because the access to medical care makes us nervous post transplant.

@lcamino thanks. My PT was here today and he thinks I am progressing well. He felt that I no longer need to use the walker which was a relief. My husband has been very insistent that I use it despite my feelings so I was glad for him to hear it from a professional. He also measured my flex which was at 95. He said was good at this # of days. My bruising is horrendous though but my PT always has a great positive attitude which does help. He works me hard so I kid him that I won't look forward to his visits if he keeps that up.
