Gabapentin dosing

Posted by cecelia19 @cecelia19, Sep 24, 2024

I’ve been taking my Gabapentin 200mg am then when the pain comes back I take another 100 mg and so on. At night before bed I’ll take 200 mg. Never more than 800mg total a day. I don’t seem to have good pain control throughout the day as it keeps rearing its ugly head throughout then I have to tamp it down with another 100 mg. I was given this instruction as needed.
Can you share the dosages you take and how you dose it and does it seem control the pain continuously all day or do you continually have to chase the pain like I do?

My understanding is that you need to be consistent with dosing and that it's not meant to be taken on demand.

Just prescribed Gabapentin 100 mg 3 times a day for chest tightness related to an old injury.
Anyone else take it for this and how good does it work?
Tried Baclofen but only got worse.
Doc thinks this may be better
Just would be happy to be able to go to the store

I take 1200mg of Gabapentin three times a day (7:00am, 2:00pm, 9:00pm) to help control chronic pain from severe degenerative disc disease and multiple lumbar (L3-S1) and cervical (C4-T1) surgeries. I combine the Gabapentin with 7.5mg Percocet, and the pain is still 8/10 most of the day. Pain is insane, but I can still function all day, even with the heavy medication dosing.

I am on a dosage of 900 mg gabapentin at bedtime. If I don't take it, I don't sleep well. I do not take any gabapentin during the day.
For pain control I rely on Tylenol arthritis strength. I take one when I get up, another about 4 hours later, and continue throughout the day taking a total of 4/day, with the last one at bedtime. I am able to go more than 4 hours between doses during the main part of the day. Maximum dosage recommended is 4/day.
Good luck in finding what works for you.

I have been taking 3300 mg a day (total) for the past 19 years. I have suffered a 40% decrease in kidney function. I'm having issues with short term memory loss, as well as balance issues. It wasn't until recently that I did a little sleuthing and discovered that these issues can all be linked back to long term use of large doses of Gabapentin.

@scampano3 Wow! Your pain sounds horrendous even with all the meds you are taking. Have you looked into an intrathecal pain pump? It has given a lot of people their lives back. You can do the trial before getting the permanent implant to see if it might help you. Just a thought.
Prayers for some help in getting your pain under control.

@joanland thank you. I think that round the clock Tylenol would benefit me in addition to my bedtime Gabapentin

@heisenberg34 Thank you! I can’t find a doctor who wants to offer me the pain pump trial, but I will continue to pursue it!
