What is Life like after Bladder Removal?

Posted by ricardin2 @ricardin2, Aug 9 6:35pm

Hi,
I'm a 61-year-old male considering bladder removal for my non-muscle invasive high-grade bladder cancer. I was wondering if anyone out there has experience living with a Neo-bladder. . Looks like footballer Deion Sanders got one recently and has spoken positively about it. I"m wondering what's it's like over the long-term to live with a Neo-bladder. Any complications after 5,10, 15 years? Any feedback greatly appreciated.

@marysews UPDATE: My stoma size has settled, and hubby ordered a punch that's the size of my stoma. When it arrives, we will test it out. Meanwhile, we have graduated to him placing the wafer with the cutout onto my skin and placing the bag over it, and then I click it together because my fingers are smaller.
About two weeks ago, the night bag was so heavy that the clear plastic clip opened and spilled onto the floor. After cleaning that up, I started the habit of placing a plastic bin under the bag. That was a good idea because the next bag did the same thing, but it was contained in the bin.

@marysews I’ve been keeping mine in a bin as well. Have been having some issues with a small amount of leakage where the pouch valve connects to the overnight bag tube and have placed a disposable bed pad underneath it to cut down on laundry. Not sure why this is happening lately although I have been sleeping on my side more .

What brand of night bag are you using? I use a Bard bag. It has a clip to close the drain tube. Then it stores upward on the outside of the bag. The w weight of the bag would not be able to open the clip.

@ronzee50 The first leak we found was a Bard night bag that opened itself, and we don't know why. The second one opened itself, possibly because it was up against the edge of the bin, so I have since been very careful of the placement of the bag relative to the bin.

@ronzee50 I also use bard. The small leak is on the other end. The only time it leaked at the bottom was when I forgot to close the valve lol! What a mess, I’ll never make the mistake again and have the bin just to make sure.🙂

@ronzee50 For both leaks I had, the green clip stayed intact, but the clear clip was the part that opened.

@141emp Yes, I forgot to clip the bottom ONCE! You double and triple check it after that.

If the green clip is still pinching the drain tube shut, and rhe bag is leaking from the bottom, the bags you have made be defective. If it is leaking from the top, possibly check the connection to you bag.

When I first was using Hollister bags, I had to really make sure the tube connection snapped into the bag. There were a few times it did not connect completely and it leaked from the top.

@ronzee50 In my case, the "defect" was the clear clip opening itself.

@marysews My error. I opened a new bag and the clip is completely clear. My bag is about half full when I drain it in the morning. Have you contacted your supplier and told them of the issue? Maybe they have heard of that problem from others.
