New onset ‘hot flashes’ years after menopause
I have recently started experiencing ‘hot flashes’ in the early morning hours (3:00 to 4:00 a.m.). I’m 72 years old. Saw my provider yesterday, and she looked as surprised as I am. Requested thyroid level be checked. Also have had a few heart palpitations soon after lying down. Searching for answers.

I’m 67 years old. Have had ongoing hot flashes since I was 52. They were frequent (all day long) for the 1st few years. After that, once or twice a day. I was able to tolerate it so did not seek medical treatment. But just this year, the hot flashes stopped and I my body went haywire. Started with a terrible skin condition mostly on my arms spreading up various parts of my body. 3 months later, developed severe anxiety disorder. As you may know, hot flashes is a sign of loss of estrogen. After 15 yrs of hot flashes, maybe it reached a very low plateau. I’m seeing a Naturopathic Doctor and started HRT for the debilitating anxiety.
Apparently hormonal changes can cause this. Although mainstream medicine puts timelines on female hormone changes, they have no evidence to show that our hormones don’t continue to change thru out our lives. Many elderly women experience sudden anxiety disorder. I pray to God that this is the source and can be mitigated.

2 ReactionsI found an article from the American Medical Association that had an interesting section on symptoms, and it made me think of this conversation. It's the section titled "Postmenopause doesn't mean symptoms are over."

A Story About Aging
@toomanyquestions I have the same thing happen when I have sweets after 4pm. I think it is high blood sugar that causes what seems to be hot flashes; I'm 70 have been without uterus and ovaries since I was 42 and have used estrogen patch since I was 42.
But if I eat too much sweets before bedtime: wake with sweating, increased BP and slight heart palps. I think is is due to blood sugar and not anything hormonal. Well...insulin is hormonal so it makes sense....
