Second Opinions: How do I get one at Mayo Clinic out-of state?
I want to know how hard it is to get a second opinion with Mayo and if it’s possible to do via telehealth since I am out of state and several hours away . I have a hematologist but he is not addressing abnormal positive results and or many high and low tests. I’m not a doctor but I want answers. I hear Mayo is one of the best.

@dcuste I’m sorry that my wording wasn’t clear. It is my intention that Mayo simply reviews my case and provides advice, as you point out in your first sentence. I’ll then return home and discuss this advice with my local hematologist/oncologist so that we can make an informed decision moving forward. He’s very open minded, and I’m confident he would support any recommendation made by Mayo. Hopefully this would eliminate any insurance problems.

1 ReactionI was diagnosed with Multiple Meyloma at a Blood and Cancer center near my home South of Phoenix. They were ready to start treatment. I called Mayo in Phoenix and asked them for a second opinion. I had my test results sent to them and gave them my insurance info. They called back within a couple of days and set up an appointment with a Hematologist. The meeting went so well and we were very impressed with the staff and facility. I decided that have my treatments done there. The process was very easy.

Hi Lori- so sorry for the late reply. He hasn’t committed to that even with lots of encouragement by this group, a support group through IWMF, and me. I have to respect his decision even though I don’t agree.
He is still on watch and wait and for that I’m thankful. Thanks for reaching out. You are very kind and compassionate. Wishing you all the best! Val

Hi Val, It’s great that your husband’s condition is pretty stable. If it changes (and it may not) at least you know you have resources that he might be interested in at that time. For now it’s basically a non-issue for him and certainly understandable. Though I know we spouses tend to do the worrying for both parties, right? ☺️

1 ReactionI was fortunate enough to get an appointment at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Mn. with a hematologist who I’m so impressed with. He is a wonderful doctor and I fully trust him. The Mayo Clinic is truly an amazing place and works like a well oiled machine. The doctors, nurses and staff are so helpful and really caring.
I live approximately 14 to 15 hours away by car and have taken that route twice and once by plane, I will fly from now on.
I was told by an oncologist at home to go live my life as there was nothing he could do for me, therefore, I got the appointment at Mayo and so glad I did. The hematologist at Mayo explained everything to me, did some tests and now we do telemedicine every six months. I also have an oncologist at home and they converse with each other about my care. I truly believe second opinions are the way to go for your best care.
I also saw a generic specialist there and they did tests to see if my MDS might be hereditary since I had a sister pass away, a niece with a blood disorder also pass away.
The good news is they could find nothing that would connect my diagnosis being hereditary in our family. They also tested my son and daughter and found nothing which was a true blessing.
