@dollies - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. That sure is a long time to have daily migraines. Do you have some form of ocular migraine? If so, has anything brought you some relief?
This is an old post but thought I would contribute as well. I'm 63 and got my first one a few years ago which was a scary experience. Same symptom as others: small C shape with flashing colorful zigzags that started small and grew over about 20 minutes. I couldn't use my phone or computer during that time. The first time I thought maybe I was having a stroke. I never had any other symptoms. Since then I may get one a month. I normally have a cup of coffee a day. I stopped 10 days ago before a scheduled surgery and didn't have any cofee until yesterday and again today. I had a migraine with aura both days. So for me, caffeine seems to be a trigger (or at least until my body gets used to it again).
...I dont think my comment can help but.. I am in 80s migraines started when I was bout 13... in those days just an Aspirin. When the zig zags invisition started with the hours long migraine pain one side I am not sure.. This continued until around my late thirties when the pain one side actully stopped but I still get the Aura - typical tiny blind spot in visiton increasing with flashing zigzags very bright even with closed eyes for around 20 minutes.... no regular time of day etc. Total about 12 a year .. so am fortunate to have stopped that pain but they still frighten me and ovr the yeas I have a list of medical issues. I dont take any medication. In my 20s i was given CafergotPH and took the full dose and could hardly wake up to go to work so I decided to just take a tylenol or such .. and now nothing. I do try and imagine the bright lights as a sort of fireworks display to calm my nerves but I know will have this til I pass away. Consolences to all sufferers of any type of Migraine. The worst part was they would start during a work day etc.
My orders are diet related. I have gotten them since the age of 13. I have discovered that I cannot eat eggs, processed meats, sauerkraut, MSG, and caffeine. As a rule my aura might last about 20 minutes and go away on their own. I refuse to put medication's in me. I feel they lead into more meds.

I've had ocular migraines for years, perhaps 1x in 18 months. They usually start with a fuzzy or blank spot in my field of vision. They present as pulsing zigzags like others have described. It's sort of like a pulsating kaleidoscope. No pain, and are visible even when my eyes are shut. The area expands and eventually (usually within 30 minutes) disappears out of my field of vision. I just sit and do nothing until it is gone. Two MDs have told me they are usually followed by a headache but mine never are. I have never been able to relate them to what I'm doing, stress, or anything else.
I have had Occular migraine without headache in the past and have been taking Magnesium Glucinate for several years it seemed affective and I had not had one until last week. It was in my left eye and was very severe and lasted about an hour. I am completely blind in my right eye. So when this happened after such a long spell of not having them it was quite scarry! From what I know about them the cause has nothing to do with the vision. Has anyone seen a neurologist or had any kind of work up. I have seen a retinal specialist for my blind eye, but since my right eye has gone blind don't see any need of seeing him because I don't feel there is any hope for it. I have not seen him for way over a year and my visits then did not require or needed an occular injections.
I have had a long history with the right eye, starting with a hole in the macular and had surgery which went well except left some scar tissue which didn't bother me all that much. Then I had the eye stroke, had injections. a clot removed but have not felt that anything would make it better, they said I had an I had a eye stroke. What kind of treatments are people trying for their occular migraine's? I worry about losing my vision completely. I don't wear my glases anymore, beause the frames seems to impeed my pheriperial vision and I see better without them. I use a electric magnifying glass when I bead, but seems lately those little tiny seed beads are becoming more difficult for me to challange.

2 ReactionsThe only thing I would have to change in your story is your current age. I am 69, and everything else is exactly the same!!

@grannyzoo - I believe you were replying to @prein in a post here, but it didn't all come through. Would you mind reposting?
