Very low resting heart rate - what could be wrong!
I have at times in my life been an elite athlete. Even then my average resting heart rate was 45. I’m far from elite now after stage 4 abdominal cancer treatment now NED !
I do walk my dogs every day and spend a lot of time gardening. Nothing massive!
Yet suddenly my resting heart rate is averaging 40-42 and my smartwatch has sent me alerts while relaxed watching TV that my heart rate has dipped to 39. It also happens sometimes when I’m asleep too. So fat I haven’t gone below 39.
I have recently had an ECG and an Echocardiogram. I phoned my GP today to find out if the results have come in. The nurse told me there is nothing amiss and my GP has written on them “No further action”.
What could be going on?! I am not on any medication. My blood pressure is normal. My weight is fine. I have naturally lost some through walking.
Just that I feel tired a lot of the time, breathless at strange times (like not when I’m exercising just getting the dogs breakfasted), sometimes dizzy when I stand up from crouching in the garden.
I am still surveilled closely and no signs of cancer in my blood tests or PET-CT scans. I am not anaemic but I am short of Vit D and on supplement.
All in all I am in good nick for a cancer survivor going on 4 years NED other than this recent very low resting heart rate. Strange.
Do I push for answers or just learn to live with whatever is going on?

@gently That’s very useful to know, thank you. I’ll book an appointment on the phone not on line, and let them know.
Isadora, congratulations on your successful cancer treatment!
Regarding your low HR- have you have a Holter monitor study done? Or a sleep study? Are you taking any medications or supplements? Do you monitor your BP?
I have a normal pulse usually in the 50's most of my life, although I am far from an elite athlete. I live in Colorado and as an RN, have taken care pf some elite athletes here with heart rates in the 30's. Without any symptoms.

2 Reactions@luvnursing52 Thank you for your comments. Apparently the lowest recorded average RHR of an athlete was 28 (and it wasn’t Usain Bolt)! Imagine.
It’s been almost 20 years since I was last an elite athlete. But having my heart learn to be effective helped in the years when I wasn’t active. My average resting heart rate stayed in the high 50’s. To suddenly have it drop so far recently with side effects of fatigue and dizziness has been a shock. Even at my fittest I didn’t go below 45.
I rechecked my smartwatch data last night and I’ve had a few days in November when my average RHR was 37!! Otherwise it’s mainly around 40-42. My doctor checked my smartwatch in real time against her equipment and it was accurate 🤷♀️
My BP reading in my GP appointment was normal. My bloods are good other than a Vitamin D deficiency due to malabsorption which I’m addressing with a supplement. My weight is fine.
I don’t think anything I’m doing has started this. No medications. No supplements (other than the recently started Vit D). No major exercise (walking 1 and a half hours a day with dogs who like to stop and sniff).
I’m going to ask for a Holter check and I’ve also just bought a BP monitor. I’ll start checking my weight more regularly (not just when having my PET-CT scans). I may have lost too much weight too quickly through walking and eating healthily 🤷♀️
@isadora2021 it’s pretty much general knowledge that fighting cancer with radiation and chemo can effect the heart. Personally I’m having an echo this February after completing my radiation and chemo treatments this past Aug. I’d keep pushing for more heart testing thru your cardiologist if nothing else than to give you peace of mind. Good luck DgA

2 Reactions@dave56pa Many thanks and I will do so
@isadora2021 I think the main issue would be how your body reacts to having a low heart rate. If you're dizzy and falling, that's a problem. Some people have a low heart rate and feel just fine.
I think your conditioning when you were younger helped you as you aged. But don't get too thin! My husband is terribly thin & I struggle to put weight on him. If I make too many high calorie meals, then I gain the weight, not him. He still doesn't take in enough calories. ( Add to that, high fat meals KILL me since I don't have a gallbladder.)

1 Reaction@kpkxrn Thank you for that suggestion. Something is not normal for me. The tiredness and dizziness is not something I’d like to live with, if I don’t need to
@luvnursing52 That’s so funny 😆 Not the result you’re after!
You’re so right. I’m not deliberately trying to lose weight but I’ve lost quite a bit in a year of walking my pups. My clothes are baggy and I’m fitting into my cancer treatment period clothes. I’ve always weighed heavy even when skinny so weighing isn’t the best tool for me. I generally avoid it so the numbers don’t make me work to get weight off I don’t need to lose. It was challenging during treatment having to be weighed so often to get doses right! Then after HIPEC (and ICU feeding by IV) to put weight back on. I too have lost my gall bladder - mine during cytoreductive surgery - so I also need to watch what I eat or it all whooshes through me without absorption of the good stuff!
I’m currently working on making sure I eat properly. I have seen a dietician to help work on it. I read on the internet (one of the major US cancer research hospitals) that weight loss can easily affect heart health.
I’ll also bring that up with my GP. Thank you.
I have had to stop taking vit d supplement as that was slowing my heart rate too much. I do not take vitamins every day my system is very sensitive to everything. I found out by paying attention when I took the vit d. I didn't take anything else. So it was easy for me to figure it out. That is me....
Hope you are able to figure out what is causing it.
