Has anyone had their home water supply tested for MAC/NTM ?

Posted by Sue, Volunteer Mentor @sueinmn, Apr 15, 2019

Since there have been several discussions lately about whether people get MAC infections from their shower or drinking water, I am curious whether anyone in this group has had their water, soil and/or the "biofilm" in the water pipes and drains tested for the presence of MAC? Either as part of a study or by an independent lab? If so, what were the results, and what did it cost?

Home Depot gives away a FREE water test that you send in today. I will keep you posted on the results.

I don't think that Home Depot is going to tell you about specifics like MAC. Costco has one also. We had ours tested but they test for thinks like Clorine, and other common chemicals. We actually had the county water guy come out and check our shower heads and the bathroom and kitchen water. But when you start questioning these folks they have no idea what you are talking about. Never heard of MAC or any other type of NTM. There again, he was testing for common contaminates and chemicals. The county will tell you your water is fine and places like Costco and Home Depot just want to sell you a water filtration system. They run anywhere from 950 to 3000.00. When I researched the only thing that I found that would kill every contaminate was a heat lamp type bulb that was somehow fixed in your water heater I think. Can't remember but it was only used for hospital and lab type commercial settings and cost 25, 000. So needless to say that is out. The second time my dr asked me if I had a shower filter, I went and got one. $35.00 at Amazon. Have no idea if it works or not but the water sure does lather better. I just asked my daughter which one to get , she has had water filters on all of her showers and drinking water for the last 20 years. Only eats organic, drinks only UV filtered water and will not buy a home near any fracking. I think that she is/was ahead of her time. I also started cracking my shower door when showering about 6 inches open. I lay a towel at the bottom of the door and point the shower head a tad bit the opposite the door. It does cut down on the steam in the shower. Open the window in the bathroom as well and hopefully some of the steam will head on out. Also have a vent above the shower that helps with the mist rising.

I have read about cleaning the shower head with bleach. I was just diagnosed with MAC. So much information and it seems the infectious disease doctor only want to treat the infection.
Anyone have any advice or tips to cut down on the possibility of reinfection.

@twinn52 welcome to our helpful and caring group. I’m sorry about your new diagnosis of MAC. I don’t have it , but was told I probably did for several months. As you said, there’s a lot of info. I think the best balanced info is by Jennifer Honda, a researcher at National Jewish Health. Here’s a link.

I question if the Amazon filter will filter out MAC. There are some that Amazon carries that do. Look for Legionella filter. Safe Water is one.

@nicholslg I use a .2 micron filter in my kitchens. It is sufficient to filter out MAC.
Here is how we do it - a "10 inch" two stage under-counter water filter with a 1 micron charcoal filter at the intake end and a .2 micron Blu Technology filter at the output end, a very short vertical tube attaches it to a tap installed next to the kitchen faucet. We replace the filters every 2-3 months. This setup is in our home, winter tiny home, and camper.

@pacathy Yes. Jennifer Honda told me years ago that Oahu was tested for bacteria in the drinking water and soil and found it in both areas. Including shower heads on public showers. So what I do since I live here is to always boil my water and wear a mask when I do yard work and mask when I walk in heavy traffic areas. I do have MAC and Bronchiectasis for many years and control it by expelling mucus through nebulizing.

This is an important subject. I am looking forward to the research and data of the future. Jennifer Honda talk is very good.
Thank you for posting that. I think I have watched it at least three times

I read that there is mycobacterium testing information at mytapscore.com/products/mycobacterium-water-test. This testing is $415, they say. It's a test that needs to be sent off for, then you do it yourself at home, and send it back to the company. I haven't done it myself, but I'm thinking about it.

@sueinmn

Could you please share what company and model you have for the "two stage under-counter water filter"

Possibly the same for the Blu Technology Model as well please?
Would you have a photo of your setup to share?

I'd like to pursue this.
Thank you,
Patty

@mountains1957 No model number - it is homemade. 2 phase 10" filter housing, as far as I know Pur Technology only has one .2 micron 10" filter, and the 1 micron filter is a 4 pack from Pur or another company on line. No picture either- it is in the dark recesses under my sink.
