Ladies: How are you managing vaginal atrophy as you age?

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Sep 21, 2023

TO THE LADIES ONLY: As I got older I started developing vaginal atrophy. Then I started developing open splits on my labia that were extremely painful. I went to urgent care one weekend and was prescribed vaginal estrogen medicine. It did the trick but I didn’t want to use estrogen. I went to a GYN that recommending organic coconut oil to use externally only. This was a few years ago and it has worked perfectly. I have never had another problem. At all. I wanted to pass along a natural inexpensive solution to vaginal atrophy.

Thanks for the info, I am having a problem with frequent UTI caused because the doc said that I have Atrophic Vaginitis and to try coconut oil. Cannot use estrogens as I am a Breast Cancer survivor. I tried the Coconut oil but mine had gotten grainy, so it did not work. I used Vit E oil, it helped as did using Aquapor, wonder if that is okay to use?

@4dianeb stick with the coconut oil if that’s what your doctor prescribed. It’s cheap. I used mine after it got lumpy, just smoothed it out in my hand first. I prefer Carrington brand, just be sure not to get the one that has Gee in it. Plain coconut oil. It’s in a solid state until it’s warmed by your skin. I recently got some liquid and don’t like it as well.

@pammunson I have used a pessary for about the last 12 years, I am 72. I have a cystocele (bladder prolapse). I didn't want to do the mesh sling, as it was getting a lot of negative reviews at the time. It may be more improved now but I am not sure-the pessary is a good way to go if you don't like the idea of a surgery and long recovery time. I use a cube pessary which was the best fit for me. At a uro-gynecologist's office you should be able to try different types of pessaries to see the one that best fits your body. I am able to take mine in and out myself, which does seem to be a problem for some women. Just takes a bit of perseverance as you adjust to using it. You can usually resume your sex life, just take it out beforehand.

I’ve used Estrace cream for close to 25 years and no problems whatsoever. Coconut oil for outside around the labia area for dryness.

I’m happy for you. Some people will never have problems with Estrace, but others might. You not having problems in 25 years is great for you, but might not be such a good outcome for someone else. My GYN will not prescribe hormones of any kind. She is young and cutting edge. She says not to use it. So, I don’t. The organic coconut oil works great for me. I have enough to keep my health at optimum levels without creating a health condition I don’t have to create.

I have been using vaginal estrogen cream for 30 years with no problems. Not only is the estrogen for the dryness it's for stopping the amount of UTI's that older women are prone to get. I use it twice a week and I'm going to be 82 next month. It doesn't work the same way that oral estrogen does which I could never take birth control pills.

For me Estrace cream has very good for almost 25 years. To each their own wisdom.
