Are you taking Reclast for osteoporosis?

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Jul 21, 2020

Two years ago I was diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis because of the prednisone I was on for my autoimmune disease. I started taking Fosamax (a bisphosphonate) and had no problems. Today, the endocrinologist suggested that I switch to Reclast for 3 yearly infusions. Has anyone else taken this drug? What side effects have you had?
Thanks

@kandypatel You need to drink 6-8 glasses of water the day before. 8oz each .4 glasses before and 4 after. Taking Tylenol before can help.

I couldn’t tolerate Fosamex and have had two yearly infusions of Reclast and will never do it again! After the first one, I felt awful for months. But then in year two, I developed tinnitus starting the next day after the infusion that has intensified. But even more disturbingly, I had significant hearing loss in both ears. My audiologist tells me that Reclast is ototoix and my symptoms are permanent. My hearing loss is now being monitored quarterly. Also, a potential side effect is osteonecrosis of the jaw and you’re not supposed to have dental procedures while on Reclast. Dentists and doctors vary on their recommendations about this. But my overall feeling is that the risks outweigh the benefits. I will look into HRT. But if that’s not an option, I’ll just live with my aging bones and do the best I can to stay fit and strong.

I took Reclast for 3 years. The side effects got worse each time. The DEXA didn't show any improvement. I'm taking a break now. I'm in an exercise class, whole foods diet, and resistance training for now.

I’m doing my first infusion in a few weeks. I’m very nervous and hesitant about it! Time will tell….😬

@janeted Start drinking plenty of water a couple of days before, the day of, and for a day or two after. Take Tylenol and an antihistamine, as well. Those three things will help with any acute phase reaction you might have.
