PMR and Flu Vaccine
I contracted PMR October 2024, went through a very painful 2 months before getting it diagnosed in January 2025, and now successfully tapered off Prednisone after 6 months. My effected areas of hips, shoulders and neck while not painfully achey, they are not the same in terms of strength than before PMR. I have not ruled out that I contracted PMR from the flu vaccine I received in October 2024. Two questions:
1. Has anybody experienced post PMR body impacts such as tiredness or fatigue?
2. Do you get an annual flu vaccine?

I got the covid shot and then the second one at the recommended time frame on 2021. Approximatley 3 months later I developed PMR. More pain than I have experienced in years in my groin and in both forearms. It has been about 4 years now. Started with high dosage of prednisone. I am a 69 year old man, active life style. I have it fairly under control with the following meds
Daily
Morning - 2 mg prednisone, folic acid and one D3
Evening - hydroxychloroquine 200 mg
Weekend - Methotrexate 2.5 Mg Tablet - 6 tablets
See my rheumatologist every 6 months
The thing I do not understand is why I have a conats very dull ache in only my left fore arm.
Thanks to all who contribute to this forum. I plan on asking my GP and RHEU about the covid shot and PMR connection.
interesting study:
Polymyalgia rheumatica following infective triggers or vaccinations: a different subset of disease?

That is interesting. Thanks for posting it. I guess it doesn't necessarily make much difference to a person who already has PMR and is considering getting a flu shot?

1 Reaction@carolynne47. Shoulder/neck, now arms/elbows/hands, hips/knees--and get this: bottom of my feet!
I have a tip for breaking fingernails: Moringa Leaf powder (got mine at Amazon) just a titch--about 1/8 tsp in your smoothy daily. My fingernails have never been stronger, and I'm a gardener so that's saying something. It's an African, high-protein plant.
My hair thinned and I got precancerous lesions on my scalp after Prednisone.
My cataracts were nearly non-existent and now are considered operable after Prednisone.
My eyesight has deteriorated by two full levels? (That's what I thought the ophthalmologist said.)
I had been building bone mass since the last flare 10 years ago, I hate to see what my bones are like now.
But oh what a relief it was to take the Prednisone when I needed it!
I have been following an anti-inflammatory diet. Ate some sugary things when I had company, and now it's back to PMR pain. Hasn't ramped up too much. I'm back to an anti-inflammatory diet, pool walking, and hope to be able to control this before needing Prednisone again.
Good luck over the holidays everyone!

1 Reaction@gmdb just saw your reply. That flu ended up being covid. I got my flu shot but decided no covid shot.
I was diagnosed with PMR about a year and a half after having sepsis. I was on prednisone for a year and now take Kevzara every other week self injection. My rheumatologist recommended getting my flu shot, plus covid booster and RSV vaccine.

1 Reaction@lally - That's the conundrum I'm dealing with. Having just backslid in terms of pain and immobility after going off my anti-inflammatory diet a couple of days, I am accepting that I have PMR 'lurking with intent to loom.' So to me that means keeping healthy is the best defense. I can do that through diet, supplements, exercise (water walking, tai chi), taking plenty of rest breaks and, new to me after talking with my naturopath, is pain management through meditation. She recommended Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief by Dr Kabot Zinn. Sounds True app has it.
Now where does vaccine come into play? If I were applying a chemical to a plant pro-actively, I would want to make sure the plant was in good shape before I added that stressor and that the threat warranted it. I'm going to wait for my vaccine until I resume and improve my healthy lifestyle and then perhaps check if I'm likely to be exposed to the virus (e.g., it's rampant around town). Hm. Learning to garden and tend my own physical health simultaneously sounds like a good plan.
