Has anyone been on AlgaeCal supplement?

Hi, my Dr. recommended Algaecal supplement for my osteoarthritis because I don't want to go back on Fosamax. side effects include sarcoma of the jaw. Has anyone been on this supplement? results? It's pretty costly and my insurance won't cover it.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

It seems like the consensus is that it can at least be a support supplement. I do find that the New Chapter Bone Health is much easier to swallow which makes taking it more consistent.

Has anyone tried AlgaeCal supplement with good results?

@inquiring

I take it- it’s pretty pricey. I just had a repeat DEXA and I’ve improved 5%! That said, I also started taking fosamax 3.5 months ago so that may factor in.

Yes, I've been taking AlgaeCal Plus for years, but I don’t think it’s a substitute for medication, especially if you have severe osteoporosis. I’m theoretically against medication, but my disease persists, so I have no other options.

@maymore true, that if one has severe OP, supplements, etc. might not work out….like many others, i had other health issues and docs felt that these very strong meds were not a good choice now…I’ll give it my best shot with good supplements, exercise, PT by a person with OP experience and dietary adjustments..one step at a time—and pray that better meds come along if needed !

Algae Cal contains magnesium oxide which is the absolute WORST form of magnesium bioavailability in the body. It is also the cheapest form of magnesium and if it is included in any formulation, stay away! It mainly gets excreted and only 20% absorbed. That alone turned me off that formulation. Plus it is so expensive for what you get. I have read the best form of calcium is calcium hydroxyappatite which you can get and add to your other supplements. That form is the exact form of calcium in your bones so the body recognizes it and absorbs it readily.

@nycmusic Yes, avoid the medications as long as you can!!They have horrible side effects. I’ve tried but ended up with compression fractures. I will continue to take AlgaeCal every day as well as a number of other important supplements like Annatto vitamin E

@humphreysbr , thanks !..totally agree and thanks for the calcium info which I have been considering…do you use a particular brand of that calcium ? It seems it might be best to put together the important elements separately—the calcium, the D3 and K2…

@nannygoat5 does anyone here take the generic of Fosamax, which comes in different dosages (Fosamax is only 70 mg)…. If so, any brand that is better ?

@nycmusic PS new Chapter bone supplement uses better magnesium and lower amount. .plus, those tiny tabs allow for gradual and/or selective dosing.

@nycmusic yes that is what I do so that I can cherry pick the best formulas of each ingredient. I take the D3, K2, magnesium, calcium hydroxyappatite and lots of trace minerals plus fort bone collagen. I use a lot of NOW vitamins but there are many good ones.
