Has anyone been on AlgaeCal supplement?

Posted by klansford123 @klansford123, Sep 7, 2025

Hi, my Dr. recommended Algaecal supplement for my osteoarthritis because I don't want to go back on Fosamax. side effects include sarcoma of the jaw. Has anyone been on this supplement? results? It's pretty costly and my insurance won't cover it.

@nycmusic yes that is what I do so that I can cherry pick the best formulas of each ingredient. I take the D3, K2, magnesium, calcium hydroxyappatite and lots of trace minerals plus fort bone collagen. I use a lot of NOW vitamins but there are many good ones.

@nycmusic Yes, avoid the medications as long as you can!!They have horrible side effects. I’ve tried but ended up with compression fractures. I will continue to take AlgaeCal every day as well as a number of other important supplements like Annatto vitamin E

@maymore

I've taken a number of op drugs and no noticeable side effects from any. A bit of lower leg discomfort after my second shot of Prolia.

It seems like the consensus is that it can at least be a support supplement. I do find that the New Chapter Bone Health is much easier to swallow which makes taking it more consistent.

@inquiring I like New Chapter too (small tablets!) but I recently noticed it does not have Boron, so I may add that separately.
Also, Garden of Life makes a few formulations of algae calcium which I've used in the past.
Jarrow's Bone-Up uses Microcrystalline Hydoxyapatite, which someone else in this group said is best. Who knows....

@sigggie I have found all Jarrow products to be excellent quality. The Jarrow bone up sounds effective with the microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite. I Googled that form of calcium and it is the most bioavailable to the body so I was convinced reading that to only use that form of calcium.

Are you referring to the AlgaeCal's calcium pills or their collagen power? I take New Chapter Bone Strength calcium pills which, like AlgaeCal, are sourced from algae, but they are cheaper.

I also take AlgaeCal's collagen powder which has "Fortibone" which is recommended to help osteoporosis. I don't know how effective it is for me because I've only been taking it a few months.

I have heard that bone broth is a great natural source of collagen and very good for bones…some of the commercial brands don’t taste great, but you don’t have to drink it plain.. Brodo is a better brand, and adds a touch of flavor. Ideally , making your own is great because you can make it to your own taste.

@nannygoat5 does anyone here take the generic of Fosamax, which comes in different dosages (Fosamax is only 70 mg)…. If so, any brand that is better ?

@nycmusic I took the generic version of Fosamax for just over five years. I had no side effects and tolerated the weekly dose of 70 mg well. It worked very well for the first two years with a 25% improvement in my lumbar T-score. However, it did not improve my hips at all and they continued to deteriorate slightly over the five years.

It stopped working for me over time and I lost all the gains and then some over the entire treatment duration. I also fractured my T-8 vertebrae at the five years mark.

I don’t think that it would have made a difference if I’d been on the brand name medication vs. the generic.

@oopsiedaisy thanks for sharing your story…from what I’ve read, the reason someone would opt for the generic has only to do with control of dosages, since generic comes in several dosages-also allowing for splitting the dosage—mostly of interest to people who already have digestive issues (including cancer).
