Woman looking up hospitals on HealthLocator

When you’re facing a health issue, finding the right quality hospital is a top priority. That’s where HealthLocator comes in—a new, easy-to-use digital tool built by Mayo Clinic.

What Is HealthLocator?

HealthLocator is a free, public resource that lets you search and compare quality scores for more than 5,000 hospitals across the United States. Whether you’re looking for the best quality hospital in your state, city, or need specialized care—like treatment for heart valve replacement or colon cancer surgery—HealthLocator makes it simple to find top-quality care near you.

No Account Needed—Just Search and Compare

HealthLocator is completely free to use. There’s no need to create an account and no  subscriptions. Just visit the site and start searching—your privacy and convenience come first.

How Does It Work?

HealthLocator brings together existing external national quality data into one clear, trusted source . Hospitals are scored on three key areas:

  • Quality Outcomes: How well hospitals keep patients healthy, ensure survival, and avoid readmissions.
  • Patient Experience: Based on real patient feedback about cleanliness, comfort, and care team efficiency.
  • Patient Safety: Measures how well hospitals avoid preventable errors and complications like infections and bedsores.

All scores are based on publicly available federal data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), including patient surveys and safety metrics. The ratings are updated quarterly, so you always have the latest information.

Why Trust HealthLocator?

HealthLocator was built by Mayo Clinic. It’s the same approach Mayo Clinic uses internally to guide its own quality improvements—and now it’s available to everyone as a public service.

Make Informed Choices for Your Health

Choosing a quality hospital shouldn’t be stressful or complicated. Created for patients by those who serve them, HealthLocator reflects Mayo Clinic’s primary value, the needs of the patient come first and is offered as a public service to help people make more informed healthcare decisions.

Ready to find your best hospital? Visit HealthLocator and start your search today. No account, no cost, just answers.

With all due respect I jumped for joy when I saw this. I am an active Mayo patient now.. meaning I am still seeing a Mayo MD for a specific heath issue pertaining to the issues here on Mayo Connect. Mayo Connect has been amazing in my making progress there. However, I am located in a very distant home base seeing local physicians for various reasons over the years. In general, I am finding more and more if you see a specialist and ask a question outside of their practice area, in general. they make it very clear they cannot respond. The question becomes: "how do you find quality care in other specialty areas within a practical distance from home base?" or even what was once called a GP? I just accessed Health Locator. I input Nashville, TN where I also see a specialist with the same experience. Response from Health Locator within 25 miles was ; "no hospital found; may be not within minimum population" Vanderbilt Health Care is in Nashville as well as other medical facilities" .. would appreciate your feedback. in working with the Health Locator.

@joaf37, you're right, there are a number of excellent medical facilities in Nashville, TN, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt Health. There may be a number of reasons that Vanderbilt didn't appear in the search results according to the filters you used. I see it listed by state here: https://www.healthlocator.org/state/tn

As the HealthLocator rolls out more specialities will be added and improvements made to the app. Should you wish to provide feedback, please contact the team using this email info@healthlocator.org
