Hi Charlotte,
I'm sorry you have an UTI. That's not fun. I had a UTI and had to wait a week to see my doctor. I did some research on the Mayo Clinic website and it said that dehydration can cause a UTI. So I started drinking a lot of water and it worked! The UTI went away and I cancelled my doctor's appointment. Now possibly I had a mild UTI and that's why I didn't need any medication. Water is very good for your body. We all need to drink a lot of it. I hope things get better for you.

1 Reactionthanks for your suggestion, while I am waiting for my prescription to be filled, I used some vaginal cream Estrace yesterday - it gave a little relief or maybe I'm getting better after having had symptoms for over a week. I agree UTIs are miserable.

1 ReactionThere is an OTC med called AZO that really helps take the pain and the urgency away while you wait for the antibiotics to start working, if you decide to use them. I have found it extremely helpful

2 Reactions@charlotte12
I developed a UTI on a recent trip to Sweden- symptoms already on the 2 nd day there.
Usually, I also drink a lot of water to flush it out but it was getting worse. I went to a clinic and was prescribed a form of penicillin aimed at treating UTIs. After the 5 days were finished the symptoms returned, worse. Back to the clinic. This time I took Cipro- I very rarely take it because of Achilles tendinitis in the past. Cipro can cause other problems too. Cipro worked.
It was interesting to learn that I got rx only because I was over 65. My daughter confirmed that- she has had UTIs in the past and was refused antibiotics. She had been suffering at home for a week once without treatment.
I assume they are trying to avoid antibiotic resistance, but I think that’s a bit extreme.
I developed pyelonephritis in my 29 s.

2 Reactions@pml I had many UTIs when I was in my 30's. At that time my doctor prescribed Macrodantin and that worked for me. Many years later I developed a silent UTI meaning I didn't have the usual symptoms I'd experienced in the past including pain and urge to urinate. At that time it turned out I had a large kidney stone that did not pass and was infected. Again, no pain but I did develop fever, chills, and aches as I was septic. Scary, right? I was prescribed Cipro at that time and it worked. Cipro was prescribed because of the type of bacteria (which I cannot recall right now). After the kidney stone was removed (surgically) I took Cipro for a short time. I didn't have any side effects from Cipro. I've had one or two UTIs since then and been prescribed a short course of Macrobid.
What did you decide? Cipro? Another antibiotic?

3 ReactionsI used to have UTIs so often that I was on prophylactic meds. I had a procedure and no UTIs for decades. Just got something that felt like a UTI and was prescribed nitrofluoritonin (spelling?). This is the new go-to drug. I reacted badly to it. It even made me yellow color-blind briefly which was really freaky. I won’t take that again.

1 Reaction@mayo99824 - What "procedure" did you have that gave you relief from UTI's for so long? Thanks.
I refuse CIPRO and all medications in that class.
