Aggressive Bladder Cancer: Tips to help hold meds in bladder?

Posted by jimg56 @jimg56, Jan 26 6:45am

My husband is on his third Infusion treatment with gemcitibine . So far no real side effects or problems. The only thing he is having a rough time with is holding the drug in his bladder for the hour. We have to stay there as they have to leave cathedar in so meds stay in his bladder. Some people can get the infusion and leave but he cant hold it in so we stay.
It is uncomfortable in waves for him. It comes and goes.
We get through it as I sit with him and watch tv in his private little space @ the hospital.

Heard a scientist say
When they take a biopsy of a tumor they are breaking it apart causing it to spread. Instead of taking a biopsy just have the entire tumor taken out.
Then test it. Seems to make sense to me.

Thanks. Let us know what the response is. To all who are going through this, including family members, you are in my daily prayers. I think this is more difficult for my wife than it is for me.

Finished with infusions. He missed 2 but dr did not add the missed ones to the schedule. Now we wait till 4/14 for cystoscopy and hope the infusions work.

I wish you and your husband the very best. This disease has a lot of vicissitudes. Never lose hope.

My husband has found it easier with the last two treatments he has had. He has 6 more to go. He is able to hold it in for 60 minutes. I find that if he avoids drinking anything 4-5 hrs before his appt. He does better. Especially coffee. I also think it depends on the RN doing the treatment. I can tell by his face as he is being set up. I think if things are positioned just right he’s able to hold it. Good Luck everyone.. keep the faith … we got this!!!!👍

You said it depends on the RN doing the treatment and if things are positioned just right, he’s able to hold it. Can you give more details about that. I started Gem/Doc treatments and I’m having a difficult time holding them in.

Hi,
I am not exactly sure but I find that depending on the nurse that does the
Treatment makes a difference. I think if the inserted balloon is perhaps just in the right spot he can hold the gem for at least an hour. They put a clamp on the tube also to help it from flowing out. With some nurses i can tell by my husbands face he feels nothing with other nurses he cringes. Some are slow and careful some are a little faster. He was able to hold in the bcg with no problem because it is a lesser amount.
Do they clamp off the tube for you?
Not sure it will help but worth a shot.
