Has anyone taken trazodone (Desyrel) for insomnia. If so, what was your experience with it?

@sharshy not much i can take. sometimes i take s Benadryl or a Xanax but you can't fo that every night. sometimes a few Motrin helps me sleep. basically i just dont sleep much. Melatonin doesn't work and ambien was bad. thinking of asking my doctor for restoril. never tried it but a friend was taking it in the hospital. not something you are supposed to take long term. i don't really know the answer. I have been dealing with this since i went through menopause thirty years ago. good luck to you

@lindadiane, since you are currently prescribed Xanax, which is a benzo, maybe try asking your doctor if you could switch from Xanax to Lorazepam. Because Xanax is basically a medication for anxiety and Lorazepam is a medication for sleep and anxiety. Sounds like you don't take them daily, but maybe if you were taking lorazepam for both your issues, anxiety and sleep, your doctor would give you more per month. I was taking Diazepam( valium) and Ambien, but Ambien wasn't working good for me, so my doctor stopped the Ambien and the Valium, and prescribed me one medication instead. Lorazepam. I also take 30mg Amitriptyline as well daily. Good luck to you.

Thanks, the problem with Trazodone is it sends me to sleep but doesn't stop
the pain so keep waking up.. All these have awful side effects. It's no
wonder I am anxious and depressed sick of it.

@sharshy what pain do you have while taking Trazodone? And is it possible the pain is from something else?

@cindisue I agree. Sleep is extremely important for health, mood, and so many other reasons. Being in the medical field I believe that Benzodiazepines are very helpful but they are addictive drugs. I think if they are used as prescribed they should be given. There are so many people who abuse them which presents problems for those who don’t.

@wgray they also wreak havoc with your brain and are not meant for long term use, from what I’ve read

That’s true but I also think it depends on the person and dosage they are receiving. It should definitely be monitored by a physician on a continuous basis.
