To stay on Eliquis or not
I was diagnosed with afib on 05/03/2018 while on a 30 monitor because I asked my PCP about the irregular heart beats that were showing up on my pb monitor. I had 2 min 30 sec event that I never felt. I was told that I need to start taking Eliquis which I did 2 5mg daily.
I have tried to find out all the information on my condition that I can. I am 75 year old male with hypertension.
I bought myself a fitbit sense that monitors my heart rate and the ability to take a ekg. I also entered the Fitbit heart survey which lasted from 5/7/2020 to 11/12/2020. During this period no events where recorded in my every day monitoring, no events.
My question is, is Eliquis doing anything for me? My understanding is that clots would only develope because of an afib event. No AFib events, no clots.
Is my thinking correct in that I should be able to stop the Eliquis until I start having events again. When talking about this with the PCP this morning I was left with the statement that it's up to me.
I'm just trying to make some sort of informed descion.
Thank you for any info.

NO DO NOT STOP TAKING IT!!!!!!! My mom stopped taking it for 4 days, she ran out could not afford it till her insurance kicked in. 3 blood clots in her legs developed, she had emergency surgery to fix the clots which happened, moved to a rehab facility 3 weeks later she passed away. Speculation from medical staff and her doctors were a clot broke free and traveled to her heart and brain, she passed happily watching the Timberwolves win another playoff game on 5/1/2025

1 Reaction$70 a month at $840 per year. A plane ticket to somewhere.
For Moski and the rest on this blog. Have you eliminated the number one cause of afib??? Caffeine. Coffee, colas, Mountain Dew, Chocolate, along with excess refined sugar and junk food? May be challenging but less than what you are all going through.
My doctor put me in contact with Canadian Pharmacy Sore a few years ago. I pay $60 for 3 months of generic Eliquis, which is not available in US.

2 ReactionsAfter 1 Jan 2026 the price for Eliquis will be reduced to roughly half of what it is today. Part of the Biden administrations negotiations. For me prior to the reduction the 1st purchases before I reached my deductible were $500 plus. Then it dropped to $110. After 1 Jan it will go down to about $65. This is with Humana.

1 ReactionFrom my personal understanding, there are 2 main reasons to take Eliquis or some other similar medication. 1 is if you are experiencing Afib which can cause the formation of blood clots and 2 is based on your age and if you may be at risk for Afib and/or how you score in the CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score for Atrial Fibrillation Stroke Risk. You can do your evaluation here:

Still too high!
$56 for 180 pills of Apixaban from Discount Canada Drugs with no deductible.
They all come from off shore-India, etc.

I had a pacemaker installed 9/2023; and had an ablation 4/2025 to stop me from passing out--which happened once while driving. My cardiologist apparently wants me (76) on Eliquis for life. Recent spine surgery, where I think I experienced internal bleeding, now being looked into, Very painful recovery; not done yet. I think too many M.D.s see Eliquis as "no risk". Taking a blood thinner for life creates potential serious complications for emergency care. One should be very careful with their use. I will bump that up going forward. That said, it's a Cadillac ride, other than the fact I think it contributes to making me urinate frequently at night.

Eliquis is cheap for a serious med. Everyone's situation differs in that respect; but drug manufacturers have to get paid for their hugely expensive research.
@leeman25
A drug patent is typically good for 20 years from the date of filing. However, the effective market exclusivity often lasts 7-12 years due to FDA review times and potential extensions. Additionally, companies may not bring a product to market until a significant portion of that patent period has elapsed.
Apixaban, the Eliquis generic, is not sold in the US pharmacies only outside
of the US. Americans can get it through Canada, etc.
