Has anyone taken trazodone (Desyrel) for insomnia. If so, what was your experience with it?

@sharshy not much i can take. sometimes i take s Benadryl or a Xanax but you can't fo that every night. sometimes a few Motrin helps me sleep. basically i just dont sleep much. Melatonin doesn't work and ambien was bad. thinking of asking my doctor for restoril. never tried it but a friend was taking it in the hospital. not something you are supposed to take long term. i don't really know the answer. I have been dealing with this since i went through menopause thirty years ago. good luck to you

Thanks, the problem with Trazodone is it sends me to sleep but doesn't stop
the pain so keep waking up.. All these have awful side effects. It's no
wonder I am anxious and depressed sick of it.

@sharshy im not sure what pain you are dealing with but i would think trazodone isn't the answer for that. i will ask my doctor about restoril at my next visit. dont really like taking any drugs. so many side affects with all of them

@lindadiane nerve damage after surgery. I can't sleep or sit down without burning pain. Only take Trazadon to sleep doesn't last all night pain wakes me up.

@toren123. I'm so sorry the doctors made you stop taking Temazepam. That sucks. They should never have done that. Alot of doctors just are so against benzodiazepines that they don't care about you and your well-being. Sleep is very very important to a person's overall health. I'm lucky to be prescribed a benzo for sleep/anxiety that I take daily. My quality of life is improved greatly because of taking this medication. I hope you found something else for sleep that works for you. If not.... maybe try Ambien, or Lunesta. I wish you the best and hope you are getting good quality sleep. If not, you need to talk to your doctor.

@cindisue I agree. Sleep is extremely important for health, mood, and so many other reasons. Being in the medical field I believe that Benzodiazepines are very helpful but they are addictive drugs. I think if they are used as prescribed they should be given. There are so many people who abuse them which presents problems for those who don’t.

i will only take a Xanax once in awhile if i really need to sleep. i know they can be addicting.

@wgray, As you said, "if they are used as prescribed, they should be given." Just because some people abuse them, should NOT affect doctors prescribing them for people who need them. Once someone abuses them, they should be discontinued for that person. They are punishing everyone for the wrong-doings of some. And that is completely WRONG.

@cindisue
Thank you cindisue. Ambien had too many side effects for me and several others didn’t help. I am taking Lunesta which helps some. I also take Gabapentin which is good but also has side effects. Too bad that the needs of the patient sometimes take 2nd place to the need health care professionals feel to follow fimpractical rules.'

@toren123, yes.. it's almost a crime that doctors don't put the patients needs first, and NOT punish someone who has never abused the medication they are on. You should still be prescribed the Temazepam as long as it was working for you and you were not abusing it. I would switch doctors and try and convince another doctor to put you back on Temazepam. Good luck.
