Only 53 with severe osteoporosis and about to fearfully take Evenity

Posted by songbird18 @songbird18, Feb 24, 2024

I am 53 and just got an awful bone density result. (Spine T score 4.1, hip 3.5). The rheumatologist is going to put me on Evenity for a year but I am so afraid after reading about the dangers of heart attack and stroke. The doctor also told me you can’t get any dental work done, but you never know when you are going to have a tooth emergency. I don’t feel I have a choice but to take it because my bones are so bad and my back is in constant pain. I’m wondering if anyone has been using Evenity and how it has affected them. Thank you!

@kallettla My situation is similar. I always exercised regularly (weight bearing), and ate healthy (maybe not so much calcium intake as needed but otherwise) and my grandmother, mother and sister all have osteoporosis so I got it also. I think the DNA part can't be overcome by lifestyle in every case (I'm sure there might be some who have). I am on the 10th injection of Evenity (no problems with this med) and have a Dexa in Jan and then will see what is next. I did not want to take meds at all but I decided I wanted to try to remain active as long as possible and realized osteoporosis is serious and can cause all kinds of issues.

@deborahla Have you been told what the acceptable gap time is between your last Evenity visit and starting Reclast or something else? Thanks so much.

Songbird-
Im 74 and had a diagnosis of poor bone health and in need of a compression fracture surgery.
My Surgeon told me the only chance of him doing the surgery, would be to take evenity for a year and then check my bone health again.
After one year on Evenity and 12 shots later i went in for my surgeon to review the results.
He was amazed, Evenity strengthened my bones enough to proceed with the surgery.
The surgery was a success May5th of 2025. My thoughts for you, is to take the Evenity shots and dont read about everyones problems with the drug- Its an amazing drug and it works. Hope everything goes well for you, All the best, Joe

@joelaurie1 What drug was prescribed for to follow your year on Evenity, and how long did you wait to start the next drug? Thank you.

@susanjohnston My understanding is within a month but I am not at that point yet. Will finish Evenity 12/28/25 and then talk to my specialist. I will let you know what they say if that is different.

Thank you. I would be very grateful to hear from you when you finish Evenity.

@susanjohnston

The Amjen site will give you that info. My doc seemed a bit relaxed about the timing so that is the resource I used.

These comments are very helpful. 58 yo with severe osteoporosis. I was worried when I found out about the cardiac side effects from Evenity but since I have no cardiac issues I think I will be ok. Just waiting to see if it's covered by insurance. Most posts are positive with no real side effects-very encouraging. My rheumatologist also told me that I will have to follow up with a 5 yr medication. She does not recommend prolia and I don't think I would want that after reading about it.
I am also going to begin hrt. I'm about 6 years post menopausal but they don't seem worried. I am deciding about the testosterone pellets or cream right now. Any advice on that?

I am 55 and just found out I have poor bone density as well. I’m not going to take Evenity. Too many side effects. I have no back pain btw. Hoping to start strength training and keep walking.
