Coughing and Airway clearance
Does anyone have this experience?
When coughing to try and get something up , you can hear or feel something break up but can’t get it out? Is it still considered airway clearance if you can only bring it up but not out?

@scoop Yes, I am. But, I was not aware of the 15 minute time relapse before beginning the saline after doing the Albuteral. Will give that a try and see how it works - was doing that w/i a couple of minutes of the saline. Will also check out the app on my phone. Thank you for the heads up.

I have a hiatal hernia since in my twenties.
My Pulmonologist called me after my latest CT scan.
I have some more Mac growth.
His main concern was my hiatal hernia.
He said quite larger than last scan.
I asked him maybe because I'm quite thinner than last scan.
Then he asked me about bloating, burping, etc.
Sending an email to my primary.
I have an appointment coming up next week.

1 Reaction@ism1936 @sheila7a I was told while at National Jewish in Oct. of 2023 that I had a hiatal hernia.
I read that one should follow all suggestions given to patients for acid reflux. Have you heard this or have you been told this.???
Do you have symptoms that the doctors(s) feel you now have due to the hiatal hernia. I can't specifically say...... nor do I know if I have typical symptoms of having a hiatal hernia. Do you have specific symptoms associated with a hiatal hernia???? Do you have specific symptoms that the doctors indicate are being caused by your hiatal hernia????
They say we should not do postural drainage with acid reflux and therefore it can also somewhat apply to a hiatal hernia if it is causing certain symptoms and problems. Have you heard that? I do postural drainage and have not had any indication, specific symptoms, that doing postural drainage is causing a problem for me.

@lsm1936 I see that you found your way to Mayo in August of 2024. How long have you had BE, Bronchiectasis. I am now...83 and was diagnosed in August of 2022.
I find that there are some mornings that I am somewhat tense after doing the full therapy for our BE.....nebulizing, all air way clearance techniques and the, not so much fun, huff coughing.
Fortunately, I do bring up mucus and mucus plugs but I am having a hard time getting the plugs up from my lower left lobes. I have begun doing the postural drainage positions that are suppose to help get the plugs out of that area. I hope I am going to be successful with getting the plugs out.
I keep asking myself..."Are you going to be able to do all of this in your upper eighty years or possibly 90's" Overall, as we know, we have no idea what tomorrow will bring in living life day to day.
Hope you are having a good day.

@sheila7a hi Sheila, I have a small hiatal hernia for many years now. I was interested in your comment regarding bloating and burping. After airway clearance with aerobika, I am constantly burping. I have bad reflux also but none of my doctors seem concerned. They say not do AWC after eating so I make sure I do it on an empty stomach but still get these symptoms.
@blm1007blm1007 hi, how do you know where the mucus and plugs are coming from, which lobes?
@reneemc Had my annual CT Scan this past week and it was read and reviewed by two pulmonologists and the radiologist. All indicated where the mucus plugs were showing and that the mucus plugging was worse than the last CT Scan that showed the plugging in the same area.
I hope this answers your question because you asked "where is it coming from?"

1 Reaction@cd33 National Jewish in Denver believes that in many cases Acid Reflux plays a role in developing or having BE, Bronchiectasis. Had you heard that?
Overall from all I have read and heard we should not be doing the nebulizing and air way clearance until at least two hours after meals. Have you heard that?
Have you googled: Is bloating and burping related to acid reflux or a hiatal hernia?
Barbara
@km6 I think I may have that hiatal hernia what are your symptoms and what is the doctor said please thank you I know I get a lot of Gerd back up at times and I do a lot of belching does that come with us?
@cd33
I've had a hiatal hernia for so long.
Can't say how many of my problems might have been caused by acid reflux or both.
I've had two dilations of my esophagus during endoscopies.
Swallowing some kind of milkshake so they could x ray.
Every test I've had mentions hiatal hernia. The only solution from any doctor was proton pump inhibitor. Sleep on incline. No tight clothing.
No food at least 3-4 hours before bed.
Bend at knees when picking something up.
The worse was having trouble swallowing. The panic that you are choking on food.
A co-worker finally convinced me if you can talk and breathe then your not choking.
The bending at knees is so important.
Once I bent at waist and I could feel the hernia slide!
When I stood up straight it took a few seconds to take a deep breath.
I suppose the hernia may cause acid reflux.
