Back pain while on Eliquis

Posted by rice @rice, Oct 30 7:55am

I about 2 weeks after I started taking Eliquis in July I started getting muscle pain in my back. Sometimes it moves to my hip or under my lower ribs. It does not feel like a pulled muscle. I am wondering if the medication could be the cause has anyone had this or while taking Eliquis?

My guess is yes. While on it, 5m 2xa day, I started with gastrointestinal issues, my doctors answer as to if it was Eliquis, was that I'd see six months from then when I went off. While on it, like you, I had muscle pains, at one time side to side across my groin, I couldn't lift my left leg and had to back into my car. It was as if they multiplied the longer I was off it. Now a month from off all of my joints from time to time hurt. I had a high pain tolerance previously and had no idea what a pain scale was, but now I certainly do. The major clot in my lungs was removed, but there were still clots in my arm and leg and now, thanks to Eliquis, they are gone. But I am not. And for me it helps to know what's causing the pain. It is thought that part of my problem may be that I am hyper lexible and not older, but ancient. Here's to you feeling better!

I had so many problems on Eliquis after just 1 dose and after a week I stopped taking it. I even told myself I can’t live like this and it scared me!!!
The cardiologist said I was wrong. I found a new cardiologist and I’m on warfarin now with no problems.

Google the side effects of any med you are prescribed. Your previous cardiologist needs to take Eliquis to see how many on the list of side effects affect him.

Please ask your primary care doc to get a CT of your area of pain. If you have a heart condition all they seem to think of is heart issues. They sometimes ignore the patients input of symptoms or don't have the time to listen. I had a CT done for your same issues because I think Eliquis is not good for me. Came back I have non alcoholic liver disease attributable to genetic issues. My blood work did not show anything wrong with liver enzymes. I am now seeing a dr for those liver issues and hope to get off most of the heart meds that I feel are causing me other problems. Our medical institutions have become so highly specialized that they fail to look at the whole patient, and miss the opportunity to catch problems before they are irreversible. CTs don't lie. Confirmed by Elastography (like ultrasound with pics). Mine was covered by insurance. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. The patient knows how they feel and when to complain that something is wrong. This is just one patient's experience and your issues may not be the same as mine but worth the effort to investigate. Some heart issues and liver issues produce the same symptoms. Thanks for sharing your experiences as we are all struggling to educate ourselves.

@lindy9 Ha! That's a good response. It's easy for doctors/specialists to prescribe medications to patients but let them feel the negative effects it has on the patients when they take the meds.

I am on Eliquis 5 mg twice daily and for about 3 years, have not really had any bad side effects. I am considered a bleeder, but I understand that with Eliquis, you don't bleed as much as with other blood thinners, but I don't know about that because I have cut myself before and the bleeding never seems to stop until I put a lot of pressure on the cut for about 1 hour.

I have had episodes from time to time on urinating blood with blood clogs and my Urologist tells me it is the Eliquis that is causing the bleeding because she does not find any type of UTI on me.

So I don't know but I guess I will just continue to take Eliquis for the rest of my life because I am not going through anymore cardioversions (have had 2); no more ablations (have had 2) and 3 cauterizations (have had 3) and Cario Cauterization (have had 1).

Take care and wish you the best.
