Scared, frustrated waiting for neurology appointment in California

Posted by zeedee1 @zeedee1, Nov 3 9:51am

I have Waldenstroms and a brain scan 4 weeks ago revealed meningionoma. I received a referral for neurologist but oncologist said I will need radiation. Tried numerous doctors but earliest I can get an appt is February. Oncologist doesn’t have one in his practice and said he can’t interfere with another practice. Scared and frustrated. Called insurance and all they could do is redirect me but couldn’t guarantee appt available. I live in Temecula California. Transportation too far is an issue. Ideas?

Me again. Still being treated for Waldenstroms but brain scan showed meningimoma few weeks ago and small vessel disease. My oncologist said I need a least a serious of radiation for Ronaldo right temporal node and sent for neurologist referral. Referrals came I two days but any neurologist I called can’t get me in until at least February. Headaches and nausea getting bad don’t know if it’s the cancer or tumor. Called Dr office and they said they have no control of other practices. Called insurance company getting other referrals
But can’t guarantee appts. I don’t see oncologist until Dec I but have chemo on the 22. At my wits end.
Don’t know where tomatoes. Limited transportation options.
Optim and Humana Medicare advantage are my insurance and I live in Temecula
ca. any help out there!

I wish I could advise you, as I am in Texas. Just curious, are locations limited since you are on Medicare now. I ask that because the location I go to as of the first of this year no longer accepts Medicare and Medicaid patients. Many had to seek assistance elsewhere after being notified just before this change went into effect.
Prayers that you can get the help and assistance you want and need there in California.

zeedee1: Did your MRI report state how large the meningioma was? Are you having symptoms that the oncologist is worried might be caused by the meningioma? Were you scanned for something else and the meningioma was discovered incidentally? The point I am trying to make is that if the meningioma isn't that big, and isn't pressing on brain structures that are making you experience unwanted symptoms, then I think you are ok to wait until February for your consult with the neurologist. Benign meningiomas typically only grow about 1/8th an inch a year.

Thanks for the encouragement it’s 9mm by 7mm. I am having new headaches and nausea. He wanted to make sure he wasn’t missing anything from my Waldenstroms treatments and diagnosis.

@zeedee1: The headaches and nausea are more concerning than the size of the meningioma. You are definitely having concerning symptoms that should warrant you to be able to seen before February 2026. Hopefully your oncologist can prescribe anti-nausea meds. When my dad had cancer and was nauseated his oncologist prescribed zofran, which worked well. Also, you shouldn't have to suffer with headaches for 3 months. Be proactive with your oncologist about treating you for the symptoms you are suffering from.
