Hello @molly7234 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I understand you are looking for alternative options to gabapentin for your restless legs. Do you know of the link between magnesium deficiency and restless legs? When was the last time you had your magnesium levels checked?

Hello, Ever since I received chemo I have had restless legs. I am done now but the cumulative effects of the chemo are still with me. Tapering off but not completely I hope they go away. I just went for blood work last week and my magnesium levels were very low so I received a magnesium infusion and almost immediately felt better and the effects for me are long lasting. The restless legs usually happen at night so I also take a magnesium supplement. Additionally, I also received a Rx for cannabis from my oncologist and this has been so helpful. I only take when I am feeling really bad. It has helped me so much. Not everyone cares for it but I must say it was the best medicine for me during my journey. Hope you feel better and find relief soon!!

I am taking Ropinirol. Started at low dose and slowly increased to a moderate dose. Hardly ever experience RLS.

I have been on Ropinirole for RLS for about 8 years, and I am now in augmentation. That means the Ropinirole has made me worse. The RLS is now in my arms and chest, but it’s not yet in my face. So I am in the very near future going to go through slow withdrawal of the Ropinirole to be able to go on another medication for RLS. I have also stopped taking antihistamines and am currently reducing my use of Omeprazole, as these meds also make my RLS worse.

Do you have a neurologist you see? They can help you withdraw from the Ropinirole. I was on pramipexole, and the neurologist saw the augmentation I explained, and had me go on a "drug holiday". It was hell, as I slowly weaned off it, with nothing to counter it. The neurologist was with Barrow Institute in Phoenix, a big neurological think-tank, which surprised me I didn't have something to ease off the pramipexole. I then was placed on 2 mg of methadone, which I couldn't handle the panic attacks. after one month, I weaned off that, with the help of my GP. I dropped the Barrow neurologist, and found another. try an opiate called buprenorphine. they prescribe it in a film you place it on your skin for one week, then reapply or under your tongue. I used the the 2 mg, cut in half-form under the tongue to dissolve. that worked well. just be sure to see your dentist bi-annually, as teeth decay is promoted. Good luck.

@vikkitennis I am currently weaning off 2 other meds before I tackle weaning off of Ropinirole. Also waiting on my doctor to send medical records for a Nidra device. Want to use this device will actually reducing the Ropinirole. I have not seen my neurologist since 2016, and he is no longer practicing. Will have to see a new neurologist. Also I have moved, so going to have to see a new general physician, who will give me a referral to a neurologist. Juggling too many new things going on in my life right now and hoping to start to improve for the better asap. Thanks for your information.

I was on 1200 mg of Horizant and 2 mg of a neupro patch. Then I started with NIDRA and I have eliminated the neupro patch. I am hoping to cut back on the Horizant as well but waiting as I have just had a total knee replacement and I figure the gabapentin in Horizant may help me heal.

I use life flow, magnesium lotion. Massage it into my calves, and on my feet at night. From Amazon, inexpensive, and seems to take care of my restless legs.
Wishing you calm nights…
