Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

@ritafarmer

I did not have any side effects from Reclast--it just didn't do much to improve my bone density.

Oh, okay, thankyou. All info is valuable!

I don’t think re-classed is intended to improve bone density. From what my endocrinologist told me, it’s supposed to keep it from getting worse but won’t improve it.

@debbiem I looked up Reclast (also known as Zoledronic Acid) on the National Osteoporosis Foundation website. N.O.F. says that Zoledronic acid "is approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women....Zoledronic Acid increases bone density and reduces the incidence of spine and non-spine fractures, including hip fractures." (more details on the site).

@sue225 @debbiem @ritafarmer
I do know a couple of women who are on Reclast and have not had side-effects.
I was also under the impression that only two of the drugs given for osteoporosis improved bone density, the others maintain it, but I did some googling and apparently I was incorrect. It is confusing, for sure, and that all of these drugs can have side-effects makes it especially so.

This is a very good article about drugs for osteoporosis. I generally find Mayo to be one of the best sources for information.

Hello @debbiem,

It has been a while since you last posted about osteoporosis. How are you doing now? Have you had any change in meds or any improvement in bone density?

I would enjoy hearing from you. Will you post again with an update?

Hi, Thankyou for checking in. I have a Dexascan this Friday, so I don’t know if I’ve had any improvement. I opted not to take any of the osteo drugs. Instead taking
Vitamins and I joined Osteostrong. I’m hoping for the best!

I am currently on my 3rd year of Prolia. I have NO side effects. I ended up switching doctors after approximately 15 years because of insurance problems/non reimbursements. I was 'freaked' out of my comfort zone and in the middle of treatment. I saw a new endocrinologist who agreed with the treatment as I have Systemic Mastocytosis and have had multiple fractures as well. I will continue on Prolia this year (June/May injections). See the endocrinologist and have my 1st DEXA scan after the start of Prolia. We may return to the 2 year Forteo as I had incredible results from that several years ago. I would highly recommend Prolia if needed.

Hi there. Did you mean to say that you may return to Forteo even though you had full 2 years before? That's super interesting to me.
