Is it postmenopause?

Posted by soc2 @soc2, 3 days ago

I'm 76 years old and for a year or so have been experiencing some anxiety for no reason, crying for no reason, tummy uneasiness, occasional hot flashes, weight gain, and higher than my normal blood pressure. My recent annual checkup revealed low estrogen, so my PCP suggested I could be postmenopausal. I didn't particularly want to be on an Rx so she suggested Black Cohosh. After 2 months, I don't feel any better. I've been reading about hormone replacement therapy (original HRT versus bioidentical), but I'm not keen on it. I still have my uterus, which apparently makes a difference. My pharmacist suggested seeing an endocrinologist to confirm what might be going on. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The average age for menopause is 52. So at 76 you would definitely be an outlier

Hi Soc2,
How awful you are having these issues! That must be very hard to deal with. It's good that you are seeing a doctor and possibly more than one. It does sound like menopause but it also may be something else besides the menopause. I'm 79 and thankfully am through with menopause. I went through it without any medication. I react badly to a lot of medications so I didn't want to take a chance. What helped me was drinking a lot of water and orange juice. Also eating regular healthy meals and getting enough sleep. You sometimes have to just deal with some of the symptoms like hot flashes. When you get hot flashes, just go outside. It works! They go away in minutes when you do that.
Prayer also helps. God made you and he can fix you or at least help you get through what is natural for women. I will say a prayer for you.
I wish you the best.

A low dose of an Estradiol patch might help you counteracted with oral or cream Progesterone. My mom is 71 and still has hot flashes. She doesn't have a uterus or ovaries though.
