Copd and general anesthesia
Hey friends,
I was curious about the safety of going under general anesthesia for surgery or procedures with copd . My doctor wants me to have a colonoscopy but im so worried about being put under with copd . Has anyone had this experience?

4 ReactionsI need a shoulder replacement . I opted out. . The process of the operation for this replacement requires a sort of paralysis . This and a lung administered anesthesia. I would not take the chance of furthering my lung damage or a problem with recovery from Paralysis. Speak with your doctor about this

Can you do the one they deliver to your house (Can't think of the name)? It's non-invasive and no anesthesia. I'd at least ask. Best of luck.

1 ReactionHi hobbiti. You can ask to your doctor about stool test and if they have the kits you can do it in your house and don't have to go through anesthesia. There is a commercial brand, Cologuard, that you can buy it or maybe you health insurance can cover it. I personally use the stool test that my PC gives me every year. I hope this information helps you.
I have had four (4) colonoscopies since I was diagnosed with COPD in 2005. I was put under each time. Now I am not sure if general anesthesia is the correct terminology, for the drug was administered intravenously and not via a mask. Each time, the anesthesiologist spoke to me prior to the procedure and asked a series of questions to include if I had COPD, how long and how severe. Hope this helps.

1 ReactionThanks for so much valuable info . I can get the FIT test that I can do at home for sure but my doc said because I have diverticulosis that it's not a definitive enough test , they need to see the bowel ugh . Ill chat with her about it all .
I recently had hip surgery, and as part of my pre-surgery program, had to get releases from my dentist (yeah, really) and my pulmonologist. I talked with my pulmo. guy (convenient that I had a regular visit already scheduled a couple weeks before surgery date, and he signed off with "no problem". But it sure doesn't hurt to consult first.
I'd have the proposed surgeon and your lung doctor confer. I've had multiple colonoscopies and other procedures requiring varying degrees of sedation since I was diagnosed with COPD over 25 years ago and had NO problems. It's something that most doctors can work with, as long as the lung doc and surgeon can agree on the best and safest option for you, the patient.
Often, they gave me conscious sedation, but sometimes general anesthetic and it's never been any problem for me. I make sure the surgeon is aware of my lung condition and we always have a separate anesthesiologist present.

If you don’t mind me asking, how severe has your COPD been over 25 years? Has it gotten worse or is it stable? Are you on any medication/inhalers? Thank you.
