Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

My internist advised me not to take Fosamax or the related drugs after I reminded him of my acid reflux. I tried Prolia once but think that it may have caused increased muscle and joint pain in addition to my osteoarthritis. Exercise seems to be the only safe option. Just have to get motivated.

I wondered how I would tolerate it - but it seems fine. EXERCISE - for sure. Always and forever.

I have received one injection of Prolia and I am struggling with constipation to the point where I am not willing to continue with the Prolia. My doctor dismisses constipation and back pain as non side effects of Prolia. I have had long standing constipation uses d/t taking an antidepressant, hypothyroidism, statin drugs. I have seen a gastroenterologist with suggestions for fiber. Fiber makes it worse. I am taking miralax. Has anyone else suffered from this?

I am 64 on prolia for almost one year. Have a terrible gut before the Prolia: celiac disease, IBS-c, acid reflux. My constipation and loss of appetite problem has become severe in the last two months. Now dependent on laxatives which are creating new g.i. problems. I do have a suspicion that the Prolia is a contributing factor. In the process of getting to the bottom of this. Next injection supposed to be in May. Are you still on Prolia?

@sue225 Are you taking magnesium? It is important for bone health, but also should take care of constipation. It comes in several forms, with Magnesium Oxide being the one most commonly found on the shelf at the drugstore. I take Magnesium Glycinate, which I order from Amazon. My 4th injection was due two months ago, but I have so many issues that I decided not to get it.

Thanks for the magnesium tip Mabel. Have a feeling that in some way I dont understand that the Prolia may be a contributing factor. Appreciate your trying to help.

I'm not getting another shot and I'm going to monitor my calcium and D levels. I'm starting some light weights to add to my routine. Im going for an herbal evaluation today to check on everything I put into my body meaning vitamins and herbs .

I was on Bonviva for 2 years and it didn't work. I started Prolia in January. So far the only side effects I notice are the same I had with Bonviva... stiffness in my hips and knees when I sit for a long time or first thing in the morning. I am 53 and have just started testing to see if they can discover a cause for my Osteoporosis.

I have had two Prolia injections so far. I have noticed that over the winter, my hip pain is greater than it was before the Prolia. More stiffness too.
