Metoprolol

Posted by dianearant @dianearant, Jul 6, 2022

I only started taking Metoprolol Succinate in October 2021 after having Covid. They started me on 25 mg, but I was having several side effects. They lowered it to 12.5 once a day. I had gone to my GP and told them the problems and she suggested going with the immediate Metoprolol . Well. I did and had a bad reaction to it. Called heart doctor and they said to get off and started me on Diltiazem 30mg. They said this was the lowest dosage. But three hours after taking the dose I begin to feel flush and my HR starts to go up. I have found I have to put ice packs all over me to bring it down. This has been one week since the reaction and I have been to the ER twice and in the bed for a week. I can only get up to go to the bathroom and then my heart rate goes up and I feel extremely weak. They have done blood work and EKG and nothing shows up with my heart. I might add I don’t handle meds very well. I am a one Tylenol, ibuprofen…person.

Does anyone feel the increase HR is worse when you lay down? For me its when I lay on my left side. After getting covid a few years ago I started with the pulse sound in my ears and increased heart rate when I'd lay down in the afternoon. I'd love to hear if anyone else has similar symptoms on metoprolol ...(wasn't really a problem till after covid)

Have you tried clonidine to bring your heart rate down?

I'M WITH YOU ON HANDLING DRUGS...I HAVE MULTIPLE ALLERGIES AND COUGH ON MANY BP MEDS
IT TOOK 5 YEARS TO FIND GOOD OLD LOSARTAN WHICH I'VE TOLERATED FOR 30 YEARS, NO COUGHING AND NO PALPITATIONS, VERY LITTLE DIZZINESS, SOME BALANCE ISSUES, BUT THAT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO MILD ESSENTIAL TREMOR AND NEUROPATHY IN BOTH FEET AND LEGS.
THE CARDIOLOGIST NOW WANTS TO TAKE ME OFF LOSARTAN AND PUT ME ON 5 DRUGS ALL AT ONE TIME FOR LEFT BUNDLE BRANCH BLOCK AND RIGHT A BLOCK WHICH HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED 1995.
I'M TERRIFIED TO GO OFF LOSARTAN WHICH HAS WORKED SO WELL. THERE ARE SERIOUS CONTRA-INDICATIONS LISTED FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING': JARDIANCE, ENTRESTO, TOPROL, VALSARTAN & INSPRA. HAS ANYONE BEEN PERSCRIBED THESE 5 DRUGS TO BE TAKEN DAILY? PLEASE COMMENT.

@amberamberette Can you get a second opinion? Would be worth it before you make a change. And what happens when you voice concerns to the cardiologist wanting to change your meds? Do they have a good reason? Do they have an alternative? If a doctor minds you asking these questions it may be a reason you need to see another doctor for a 2nd opinion. Wishing you well.

@brigid4
Thank you for your suggestions.
Cardiologist scheduled an appt. this week after Cardiac MRI (clear heart, good). All three
doctors I have seen agree on Entresto.
The Pharmacist says many Cardiologists are putting patients on this cocktail of 5 drugs to stabilize the electrical rhythm of heart beat and strengthen heart.
LBB Refraction has gone down. I know I must make a change soon, but I want to be free with no other distractions, need open time to try new meds.
I have scheduled Dec. 15th - hopefully a relaxed time to begin a new protocol.
Reasons: Vacation out of country and lots of concert programs in Nov- up to mid-Dec.

PS I wish I could fly out to California to see Dr. Gundry! I know there is probably a
Cardiologist somewhere who is not making money off these drug company prescriptions...

Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker. Valsartan is another such drug that works in the same manner. I am taking Entresto that combines Valsartan and sacubitril and started at the low dose and after a couple of weeks increased to the "normal" dose of 49/51 mg twice a day.

Different drugs for the same function can provide different side effects and the patient needs to be the person who decides which ones are best tolerated by their own body. When you know which classes of drugs you are taking you can look for alternatives within that group to take instead.

Having peripheral neuropathy would indicate having diabetes and a more severe condition. The medication mix is going to be different and side effects are more likely to occur as a result. One can only decide which symptoms they can live with and which they cannot. For me it is only a medication that causes severe diarrhea that I find intolerable - the other side effects I can accept.

I have been tested for diabetes, all 170 tests are within the "normal" range. There is one exception that is a constant, Vitamin D Hypervitamintosis to the extreme. I am off all supplements that have Vitamin D.
I go outside efore 10:00 AM and after 4:00 PM and use a UV/UVA umbrella { sun block on exposed skin.
I drink coffee to neutralize the Vitamin D accumulation in my body. I drink 6 glasses of water daily in addition:
two cups coffee and one cup decaffineated organic tea. I don't eat eggs or milk or any product rich in Vitamin D.

I intend to ask the Doctor for Vitamin B 12 shots hoping that may help with the numbness, tingling and recently
burning up both legs and tingling in Right arm. Those "cement" feet cause troubling balance issues.
Finding a doctor who is interested in Periferal Neuropathy seems to be a challenge EVEN @ New York University Medical Center, one of the best in NYC.

Presently the doctors are concerned about my LBBB and RA Block, urging me to take 5 new heart meds "cocktail" to strengthen the heart which is clear on the MRI, but has electrical abnormality which weakens it.
Refraction is 47% Just had an MRI and I will consult with Cardiologist, but believe I must avoid Jardiance due to all my allergies and skin problems. The last thing I need is a Fungus in the groin, common problem with Jardiance.
