Sanitizing Nebulizer Equipment

Posted by smallfish1 @smallfish1, Oct 5 8:43am

I have a steam oven that has a cookware sanitizing setting. I'm wondering if I can use that to sanitize my nebulizer equipment. Does anyone use steam to sanitize?

Never put water in your O2/Air tubing.

I use Saline to clean out my sinuses. AlWAYS.
What do you think we use if we suction you? Whether on a Ventilator or a baby in ER? Saline. And yeah I've actually suctioned(machine) myself(a lot of trach patients suction themselves) by NT suctioning. I have a box of sterile saline bullets. Sterility is very important.

@ecmoandrrt
Do you use the saline bullets for cleaning out your sinuses? That would take a lot to make enough for a sinus rinse. Or do you have another source of sterile saline for that? I have not had any luck finding a large bottle of sterile saline in local stores or pharmacies.

@cwal I've also looked for larger volumes of sterile saline and when I find it, it's prohibitively expensive for volume needed for sinus rinses. I recently looked at leading institutions recommendations and Penn (Adappa), Cleveland Clinic, and NJH all say distilled water is ok. I am trying to decrease to daily medicated rinses and now the opened distilled water lasts too long in an opened bottle for my comfort. After a day or two, I boil the rest and cool before using.
The centers also say you can boil tap water to sterilize.

Yes I do use a bullet and squirt into each nostril. I don't do this every day. Just when needed.
You can buy 100 count for around $26 from Amazon. That's what I get and we also use it to clean our Bulldogs eyes too.
Walmart online might have this also.

This is also on Amazon: 0.9% Sterile Saline Solution USP Normal 0.9% Sodium Chloride – Made in USA - 4 Pack Each 500 ml (2,000 ml Total).
500Mlx4 is a GOOD amount!!!
And it's $28.

Amazon has an abundance of Saline. Lol.

@ecmoandrrt

Thanks for info. It's still very spendy for me compared to distilled. The NeilMed sinus rinse bottles my ENT's recommended are are 8oz (approx. 240ml) and I do it 1-2x/day. I would go thru that amt. quickly.
For people who need it occasionally or don't mind expense, it's a good option.
