Suspected Endometrial Cancer: Cervix won't open to do biopsy

Posted by debra54 @debra54, Feb 1, 2023

The lining of my uterus is thick so they tried to do a biopsy but my cervix would not open and they mentioned having a hysterocmy but I'm not sure about doing that without knowing if it's cancer or not.

@kb72069, did you get the results of your diagnostic testing? What did you learn? How are you doing?

Well, thanks for asking they attempted to do my endometrial biopsy on April 10 and were unsuccessful because apparently my cervix is “angry“ and they found a polyp which was removed and screened all of my screenings so far have come back benign or no evidence of abnormal cells. The endometrial biopsy will have to be done under anesthesia because my cervix was too hard to get through apparently.

Wow, I wish I had known that there was a pill that would dilate your cervix last summer when my biopsy failed. Might have saved the month it took to schedule the hysteroscopic D&C. I wonder why my Dr. didn't suggest that. Grr.

What were the findings with your hysteroscopic D&C?

Not good. I'm still hanging out on the gynecological cancer forum almost 3 years later. I hope your visit here is brief.

I'm 55yo and just had a failed endometrial biopsy in the dr. office. NP told me I need a D&C under anesthesia for the biopsy, and I have to schedule with a surgeon. I had post menopausal bleeding and an ultrasound that showed the uterus lining at 14mm. I want to do as few procedures as possible and don't want the D&C. I want to go straight to the hysterectomy and be done with all of this. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome- a connective tissue disorder- and am tired of always being injured and having issues. I know in my gut that they'll have to do a hysterectomy anyway. Does anyone know if the patient can choose to just move forward with the hysterectomy?

Before my endometrial biopsy they had me insert two pills into my vagina by my cervix and then insert a tampon to keep them in place. I can't remember what the pill was called but it was to dilate my cervix so the biopsy could be done.

@tjperry
why don't they offer this to everyone? My biopsies were horrendously painful.

@jchantler
I mean the mispreistizone (spelling?) - offer that to help soften the cervix.

I didn't try so I don't know, but I really wish I had asked. You should ask your doctor. Today.

For me, it took them a month after the failed biopsy to get around to doing the D&C, which showed an aggressive, high grade tumor. So they showed a little more urgency in scheduling the hysterectomy, which they did three weeks later (sarcasm).

I didn't ask because I was thinking that insurance would probably cause issues paying for the hysterectomy if they don't have evidence that there's a cancer in there. And they may. But you never know unless you ask.

@cargirl11

i think this will depend on how and who is paying the bills. i'm in the US and i have insurance - i have no doubt the insurance company who deny a claim that didn't give a reason for the hysterectomy.

i would even guess that the hospital would want a reason for the surgery in case of liabilities issues.

the hospital where i had my surgery required i get a letter from my primary care doctor stating that i am healthy enough and cleared for surgery. i guess they didn't want trouble if i died during surgery. i had to have cardiac, pulmonary, and chemistry tests to obtain the all clear for surgery.

Agree that insurance may cause problems, but that's not a reason not to ask. The hospital won't do the surgery unless they're sure that the insurance company will pay for it. (They know that if they do the surgery and then find out that insurance won't pay, it's unlikely that the patient will be able to pay their outrageous bill. Getting paid is their highest priority.)

@cargirl11 I say "Count your lucky stars!" I have found uterine biopsy's to be horrenously painful. I had a D & C, perhaps as an excuse by my kind gynocologist, a woman of course, so I could have the biopsy under anesthesia. I was a bit scared, but other than that it was a piece of cake. Of course, any prodeedure carries a risk, but I was soooo thankful I got to take this route. Recovery was easy.
