Lichen sclerosis diagnosis correct?

Posted by moontree @moontree, Apr 7, 2025

Hi, new to the site. I have had vaginal/perianal burning for 6 months.
Culture all negative. Burning comes and go. Redness only. No itching at all. Biopsy finally done showed only “mild” sclerosis.
Told to start on Clobetasol. It’s been a week. It’s making my burning worse. Before the drug the burning was at a 3, now it’s at an 8. To a point I need to wash it off after 30 minutes.
I have no other skin changes. No white patches at all. You would think there would be some other skin changes after 6 months. No itching what so ever.
Does anyone have similar experience? How common is sclerosis without white patches or itching? Is the ointment making me worse?

When I have an uncomfortable flare up I get a urine culture for a UTI as the symptoms are similar. But, most times there is no infection. I do use a topical corticosteroid cream. I’m a 72 year old woman. I had ovarian cancer in my 30’s so I know my condition is caused by lack of hormones.
I’d like to hear from others about their experiences with lichen sclerosis.

I use Lisepten and nothing else. My symptoms are zero most every day. It's been my go to for many years. Be positive and know you aren't alone.

Hello @annieparker51,

I combined your discussion on lichen sclerosis with an existing discussion on the same topic titled:

"Lichen sclerosis diagnosis correct?"

Here you can meet @moontree, @sandy07 and @diwhitham2347 who discussed symptoms similar to yours.

@moontree It sounds as if you have an allergy to Clobetasol. My urogynocologist has me using only ozonated coconut oil now, and my symptoms and scarring are minimized incredibly. (New thought is that Clobetasol further dries and thins the vulvar tissues.)
I’m sorry for your LS diagnosis, but you’re not alone in this. Keep checking this site for more information from all of us.

I have used Clobetasol for about 5 years and am so glad to see there are other applications that are successful.
I just bought my 1st jar of ozonated coconut oil but don't really know how often to use it.

So far I have used Clobetasol 3times a week and ozonated coconut oil in-between. So far I haven't had a flare in 6 weeks!!!
How are others using it?

I will give ozonated coconut oil a try in between my Clobetasol applications. Another recommendation from my doctor was Emu Oil. Anyone tried this product?

I too have assumed lichen sclerosis. Biopsy confirmed nothing just redness and inflammation. When I started using Clobetasol it burned significantly when applied for an hour or so. As the inflammation became less and the bumps became smaller there is less burning on application. Now hardly any. I never had white patches. I find I must use it every other day to keep it controlled. Plan to try the coconut oil or my off day to see if that helps.

Just use a little bit and if must be applied to the correct place. Mine took awhile to calm down. Just use water to wash with.

@diamonddi
@diamonddi, I use the ozonated coconut oil twice daily, and massage it in a bit, but it can be used as often as you’d like. It will only help.

thanks so much, I haven't been doing that twice a day...may help to do so
