High impact foot hop study 50 hops a day for osteoporosis
My physical therapist was enthusiastic about this study where 50 hops on each foot a day for 6 weeks increased BMD. I am to start low and slow and work up to 50 hops each foot. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33159533/

That’s pretty cool, @geranium1. I heard recently that balancing on one foot also helps BMD. A friend of mine says she stands on one foot while brushing her upper teeth and switches feet for the lower jaw, which I thought was pretty clever.
Your post is good news 😃 indeed!!
Cheers!
Good information; osteoporosis treatment to me is very vague; certain drugs for certain people; some drugs work, and as powerful as they are some do nothing. I feel that it is a giant package that needs to be customized to each of us who need treatment; exercise, weight training, supplements, diet, pharmaceuticals. I don't believe any one doctor looks at the whole picture. The people who treat osteo treat a lot of other conditions; they don't have time to be an osteoporosis specific practice unfortunately. My doc didn't suggest any PT; did that on my own. Good to hear that your PT (medically trained professional) is excited about this. Exercise wise I asked my PT about weighted vests; she said she was conflicted about it but if I were to start to keep the weight low, like 6 pounds. This group is great to point out studies and research being currently done; I can't get this information from the doctor's office!
Thank you for the link. I’ve been doing heel drops so hopefully it has a benefit.
@jozer Agreed. It’s like the proverbial needle in a haystack, digging and digging to find the answers and the right fit. I’ve read conflicting information about the weighted vests as well.
@beanieone I should think it’s great for our balance as well.
@jozer I had a brief free meeting with a physical therapist through the YMCA who said to wear a 5 lb. vest one hour/day and jump 20 times. I am also doing strength training. However, I overdid and, after planting pansies and doing all of the above plus some, I came down in the back with neck soreness too. I've never had that happen and it alarmed me. I've now asked to meet with a p.t. who specializes in osteoporosis. I agree that treatment from docs is vague as for what we can and cannot do.
Thank you so much for the information and the link, which led to other, very interesting articles and reviews. I didn't know there were other exercise programs studied aside from the LIFTMOR trials (which led to the ONERO program). This one is particularly interesting to me:
Pinho High Intensity Exercise Intervention Improves Older Women Lumbar Spine Distal Tibia Bone Microstructure Function 20 Week RCTrial 2020 (Pinho-High-Intensity-Exercise-Intervention-Improves-Older-Women-Lumbar-Spine-Distal-Tibia-Bone-Microstructure-Function-20-Week-RCTrial-2020.pdf)
And hopping from one foot to the other and holding the pose is quite challenging for balance. Forward back etc. and also able to start light and build up to higher drops. I used to do but forgot about it. Thanks.
Yes, and okay to hold on to something, ie a chair, counter, barre for balance.
@lhankins
I had been doing the heel drops, but then sadly developed plantar fasciitis and shin splints. So proceed cautiously and wear well cushioned sneakers.
