Is there an age limit is for a lung transplant?

Posted by nonek1 @nonek1, Sep 27 1:46pm

Does anyone know what the age limit is for a lung transplant at Mayo Clinic? I have Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis diagnosed in April of 2020. I just turned 79 and just wondering if I have a chance for one.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Transplants Support Group.

From my research each facility has different age limit. Some give transplants to 80 year olds. Also depends if you have other issues from what I've read.

@nonek1, As a liver and kidney trabsplant recipient, I have not had experience with lung transplantation. However, I completely agree with @annchristiansen2623's assessment that age limits can vary.

I suggest that you contact Mayo Clinic Lung Transplant Department and ask your question. Phone and email Contact information (for each Mayo location) as well as information about lung transplant is available in this link:

.
I recieved my transplant at Mayo Rochester in 2009. Which Mayo location is nearest to where you live?

Jacksonville Florida is my closest one. I’ll see if they will see me. My pulmonologist thinks I’ve aged out and really hesitant about a referral. I’ll keep trying to change his mind but maybe I don’t need one.

@nonek1
Go ahead and make that call to Mayo Jacksonville. Only they can tell you whether they will consider you and if they need more information or medical records.
I wish you peace of mind knowing what to expect. I'm sending hugs from Kentucky.

@nonek1, I also encourage you to contact Mayo Clinic to find out more (and report back what you learned). Age is only one point of criteria. Health status may differ between people of the same age.

Here is an article from Mayo Clinic and age in relation to kidney transplant that helps explain.
- Is There a Cut Off Age for Kidney Transplant? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/transplant/newsfeed-post/is-there-a-cut-off-age-for-kidney-transplant/

Obviously, a lung transplant is not the same as a kidney transplant. The decision must be based on the individual.
