RSV VACCINE RISKS
I am 73, have MAC and Bronchiectasis. I have recently gotten the flu and Covid shots, and I am wavering on getting the RSV vaccine.
. Which one to get?
. Risk of getting Guillain Barre with permanent paralysis.
. Some people say wait; others say you must get it.
Thoughts please.

@pmmar1 Yes indeed. I was gifted with RSV a few years ago. I did not have the shot. And the RSV shot is not a one and done. It’s a yearly. Having RSV especially for children and the elderly is a no bueno. I speak from experience. It was bad for me! And it took a long time to be over it! I was hospitalized. Irene5

4 Reactions@irene5 From what I read, RSV is generally just a one time vaccine. I think occasionally it is given again (after stem call transplants, etc).

1 ReactionWell, I got covid in September 2023 around Labor day, was put on the antiviral as a precaution and did not feel very sick at all. One week later, I was exercising and resuming a normal life. Got the RSV vaccine 2 months later, in the days that followed developped a headache that would not quit, it lasted until Thanksgiving when I started coughing and coughing until I developped arterial hemorrhaging in the lungs. Hospital. Ventilator. Intervention (they inserted a tiny ball in the artery to plug it). Discharged one week later on 2 liters of O2. Off the supplemental O2 one week later. Took me a few months to completely recover. In retrospect, I think that I should have waited 3 months after covid to get the RSV shot, or maybe the RSV shot is not for me. Or maybe it was a delayed side effect of covid (it happened to some other people too, pulmonary hemorrhaging after covid), who knows? Nobody knows.
Bottom line: I am not getting that shot again. And I will always try not to get covid again as I don't like hospitals.
Best wishes of great health to all of us!

3 Reactions@pacathy And yes I stand corrected. I had been told by my doctor it was a yearly vaccine . I was told that after I had RSV, so in 2023. I just looked it up and you are correct. Thank you. I’m guessing two years ago maybe that was the thought? I don’t know why else he would have told me that. Thanks again! Irene5

1 Reaction@irene5 I looked because I was afraid I'd missed it. Maybe he just misspoke. Another possibility is that he thought you might need another. I had a lot of immunology tests done for another issue and had to get another pneumonia vaccine due to insufficient response, so I guess it happens.

1 ReactionYes, apparently that is the case. Since so much has changed since I had RSV in 2023, I am guessing my doctor at the time (not my specialists) thought it might be that type. I was in the hospital so I ‘d be giving it a 10 for a no bueno!!

1 ReactionI am not worried about getting vaccines. I got all of the covid ones offered. However the RSV vaccine did leave me with side effects that no one could explain. I went to my PCP multiple times and to a Neurologist who did several tests. I even went into PT. My symptoms were vague but annoying. I am a walker and after the shot I discovered I had weakness in my thighs. Also I had an unusual off balance feeling. I did not feel like I was going to fall exactly. What I felt was if I would turn around it felt like the inside of my head moved slower or differently than the outside. So if I was at the kitchen sink and turned around to work at the island I would feel it, or if I turned my head to see if traffic was coming I would feel it. I worked on balance in physical therapy. But that did not change anything…however it is always good to work on that when older! It completely went away after 8 months.
