Melatonin side effects

Posted by hipcheck @hipcheck, Sep 30, 2023

I have been taking one, five milagram Melatonin supplement gummie every night for a little over a year believing that it was safe but maybe I was wrong. Recently I began experiencing some concerning health problems that are apparently known side effects of long term Melatonin use and would like to know if anyone else has had this experience and if their symptoms went away after discontinued use. I've stopped taking the supplement several days ago but I am still experiencing, nausea, dizziness, difficulty eating-getting food down, fatigue, lethargy, joint pain, feeling warm-hot flashes without fever, night sweats and probably some others I'm forgetting. I will be contacting my Doctor next week but any help would be valuable and appreciated. Thank you.

I just bought Starbucks cold brew last night to try it. It comes already prepared in a bottle or a box. I drank a cup before bed and no headache during the night. I'm almost afraid to say it out loud in case of jinxing it. Will try it again tonight. Going away next weekend. Driving from Northern California to Oregon and if this works it will be a miracle. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Stomach not hurting either.

I have been taking 10 mg. For a long time at least 5-6 years. I do not have any side effects from Melatonin. I do am frequently going to bathroom in the night. ( now a days 5-6 times) That is because of OAB, I assume.

When I suggested cold brew it was because it seems to be better on the digestive track, but I only drink one cup in the morning. I don't drink it at night. It would keep me up. Periodically, I will take ambien but I have 5 mg pills that I break in half. Also, periodically, I will take up to 3 mg of melatonin. Fortunately, most of the time I sleep okay and don't need something.

I have something called Hypnic headache. It's rather rare and mostly affects older women. I have been waking up for the last 16 years or so during REM sleep with an awful headache. They don't know much about it except that caffeine and or melatonin help. If I drink coffee it does help but I also have gastritis and IBS-d and the coffee is killing my GI tract. Also suggest melatonin but even if I take just 3 mg. it feels like my head exploded. Why does melatonin affect me that way? Everybody seems to tolerate it well.

I used to take a half of a Benadryl for a sleep aid which no longer worked. SO, my provider recommended Melatonin 5 mg. Headaches, and very upsetting dreams. I have ruled out literally everything else from diet to other meds (which are few). Post menopausal. Back on half a Benadryl a few times a week.

People should be aware. In Europe a prescription is needed for Melatonin, if taking more than 5mg you have to be under a Doctors care. I have a friend who has been taking 30mg a night for two years. The side effects started with Tremors, Dizziness, extreme Hair loss, and finally Seizures. She has had every conceivable Test. Dr. Could not find the cause of her symptoms. I have done a lot of research, and yes, these are all the symptoms related to overdosing with Melatonin, it is only meant for short term use, even in small doses. Consumers should be made more aware of the possible side effects. This Hormone should not be manufactured as Gummies, Pill form would make more sense .

Side effects are uncommon in taking 5 mg of melatonin nightly.

I've been taking 10 mg of melatonin off and on for five years. No side effects whatsoever. But I am questioning if it's losing efficacy.

I wasn't aware that long-term melatonin use is potentially dangerous. Maybe I should start worrying?

As for OAB/neurogenic bladder, as of late I've been having too many nights when I've awakened 3 to 5 times becausing of voiding needs. In my experience (I'm taking Silodosin), anything more than 0 to 1 times per night means something's wrong. But I doubt my problem is the melatonin.

In some people side effects are more noticeable and melatonin is not suitable for all and it has become prescription only in the UK .
My partner had extreme low blood pressure one night after taking 10mg instead of 2 mg melatonin .He stood up walked fainted and fell became confused disorientated didn’t know where he was . I found him on all fours in the hall , he then tried to get up again felt immediately faint and fainted backwards through a doorway as he didn’t respond to me telling him to return to all fours .
Luckily uninjured I then persuaded him to crawl to bed .
He then needed the bathroom after 20 minutes couldn’t sit or kneel without feeling extremely faint as his blood pressure had lowered dramatically .
This lasted over an hour and only rectified when he slept it off with monitoring .
I feel the effects of melatonin and side effects are only just coming to light within the medical world .
We have a yellow card system for reporting side effects in the UK I’m definitely reporting this one .
Slight nausea and increased depression noted as well .
Side effects are listed as 1 in 100 or 1 in 1000 to cover melatonin but maybe they are more common .
My partner went to the doctor the next day and they were unaware of potential side effects and put it down to just getting out of bed .
The more people that flag side effects on medical reporting systems the more the medical world will build a picture of potential risks .
It may be a natural hormone but it can alter all sorts of physiology creating side effects .

What an experience! I have read that actually less than the recommended (on the packaging) dosage is more effective than the recommended amount. So, thinking "more will be better" not only potentially increases a side effect reaction, it won't have the efficacy that is wanted. Thinking we can "just take a pill" instead of working on natural pathways within the body (like exposure to sunlight) needs to be done with care, if at all. Happily, your partner didn't sustain any serious injury and thank you for your warning for the rest of us. I have restless leg syndrome and have learned from my doctor (and my experiences) that melatonin is counterproductive for me. Cheers to the UK!
