Continued Post-Nasal Drip and Constant Mucus in Throat

Posted by adominic @adominic, Mar 22, 2022

I was sick the last week or January/first week of February. Home Test-negative, rapid PCR-negative. All COVID symptoms and known prolonged exposure to infected individuals make me believe it was COVID. Since then, I have had a tremendously hard time dealing with post-nasal drip and mucus collecting in my throat. It is clear, sticky and almost impossible to remove from throat by coughing or clearing my throat. Flonase does nothing, allergy pills do nothing. Had anyone else had an issue like this post COVID? How long did it last? What did you do to cope? Small problem in comparison to others that post here, I realize.

It’s been over three years since I had Covid and started this chaotic journey, and about 2 1/2 years since I came to this forum seeking help. I thought a couple times I was on my way to wellness but it didn’t happen, in fact it’s progressed. From the initial glob of phlegm in my throat I’ve continued to struggle and realized it’s all connected and all started after Covid: from sinuses, tinnitus, the gagging phlegm in my throat, asthma, allergies, GI problems as well as fatigue and dental problems from the extreme dryness. I may finally have some answers and a diagnosis. My primary’s leaning toward Sjogren’s Syndrome, or Disease, based on recent labs although Rheumatology will have to make the final diagnosis. The labs were ANA+ Titer 1:320; ssa 5.5. This is the second ANA+ result I’ve had, the first being immediately following the Covid infection; Rheumatology dismissed it as a fluke from the virus; but the first time the inflammatory marker, ssa, showed up ( range is 0-0.9). Three years of misery as a result.

Have you tried the simple nasal saline rinse? I use a NeilMed Sinus Rinse product. It helps.

Haven’t posted on this sight in quite awhile…. Sad to see we are all still where we were and are. I had Covid four years ago. Not one Dr could or has helped. They simply haven’t “ figured it out” yet, so they keep using treatments they have always used for symptoms that fit the labels they are familiar with. The nasal drip is a perfect example. I have had it for four years triggered by Covid. Of course allergies is a convenient label and nasal sprays are a convenient offering as a solution. BUT it is obviously not allergies and nasal sprays do not work for at least the majority of us Covid long haulers. No one sees me without a tissue in my hand. That is the only dependable assistance until someone “figures it out” with a new label. And we all know that there are extremely worse symptoms people are dealing with BUT it is extremely taxing 24 and 7 that affects breathing and feels like a four year cold. Not pleasant…

@quickstepper in what way does it help? Do you actually feel better altogether or does it just loosen/lessen the phlegm?

@uget1shot I do it before bedtime and it helps clear out my sinuses and make breathing easier. My nose tends to get stuffy when I lie down for sleep, and this helps. I hope better breathing means better sleep. And perhaps in a small way it helps me feel better?

@quickstepper thanks for replying. my ENT has recommended a sinus rinse. I'll admit I'm a bit scared to do it. I've read horror stories of people who use regular water and end up with nasty bacterial infections leading in some cases to death. I realize this isn't that, but I have become paranoid with all things health that can conspire to make my body even more miserable lol. I know I should try it.

@uget1shot you CAN do this! I didn't like the idea of it at all. It wasn't fun the first time, but then I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was worth it because I liked how clean my sinuses felt afterwards. It's just one minute of saline rinsing and you're done. I guess you can use a neti pot, but I used the squeeze bottle. The Neilmed people have videos to watch to get you started. Yes, absolutely buy some distilled water. No tap water allowed for this rinse.

I have had long Covid symptoms for 2 years. Balance is off, fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog, and phlegm in my throat caused from constant post nasal drip.
Coughing to clear my lungs, and constant clearing of my throat when talking is what persists. I'm using NAC, a supplement and pseudoephedrine twice a day.
I recently went to a pulmonologist, who prescribed Trelegy inhaler once a day. After 14 days, I am clear, no cough, no phlegm. I have another 14 days to use the Trelegy inhaler, and a follow up appointment with breathing analysis next week. I feel better than I have in two years.
Blood work came back, and I am allergic to cats, dogs, dust and mold, none of which I am exposed to presently.
I hope this may be helpful to anyone who is still suffering.
