Osteoporosis diagnosis post kidney transplant. Terrified.
I will celebrate four years Dec 4, 2025 with my kidney transplant. I have been diagnosed with Osteo on my left hip. Drs. are pushing prolia, and I refuse to take Prolia. Would like to know if anyone else has taken any particular Bisphosphonates sp? post kidney transplant with minimal side effects. I also do not have a gallbladder. I will not do an injectable. Thanks for any information.

Is it possible that you can rebuild the bone with exercise, a very specific plan for osteoporosis? I am pre-liver transplant with mild osteoporosis in the left hip and am doing physical therapy to build up. Walking is a fabulous exercise for it, but check with your medical team if it’s not been raised.

2 ReactionsHow are your calcium and PTH levels? I just had a parathyroidectomy due to elevated pth and calcium leading to two fractures after minor falls. Ten years post transplant.

2 ReactionsGood morning from Canada. I'm not a kidney transplant patient. I am a liver transplant patient just celebrating on Saturday October the 11th. My 5th transversary. I take prolia shots twice a year and have been since my transplant and I have had no issues. I have more issues post covid and flu shots than I do from my prolia and I have actually had an improvement in my bone dispersion since taking it. I'm not a medical doctor. I don't claim to be and I don't play one on TV. I am just a patient. Does everything that my transplant team tells me to do to ensure that my transplanted organ will last as long as possible. Check with your doctor if you're really concerned, talk to your doctor but I don't really see any issue with taking prolia. If it means I don't break a hip and spend 6 months in the hospital and die from pneumonia then hey, that's a good thing

That's really good advice. It's very important to move and exercise.

1 Reaction@2025xyzmalinche,
I agree that osteoporosis is a frightening word to hear. As transplant recipients, we do face a double challenge due to the natural aging process and our necessary transplant medications. When diet and exercise are not enough, we will be advised of another medication, as you are currently considering.
My experience is limited to monitored. with routine screenings. And so I want to share these additional links with you:

@2025xyzmalinche, I also have no gall bladder with a liver and kidney transplant. I'm curious as to why you are against an injection? - Is it the needle? or the medication? What is your nephrologist's opinion on this treatment for you?

1 ReactionI am 38 years post liver transplant. In the last year they discovered that I now have osteoporosis. I had my first shot a few months ago. I did not want to add another medication. I have had no problems with it. My doctor recommends doing some walking and lifting weights. Also to get at least 600 grams of calcium thru the foods I eat. Best of everything to you.

1 ReactionI am 15 months post liver and kidney transplant. I had osteopenia pre transplant and since have developed osteoporosis. I take a calcium supplement because I don’t get enough from my diet and I take a generic of Fosomax. One pill a week for 5 years. No injections.

1 ReactionKnowing when it's the right time to start medications for osteoporosis and which type is the right one can be hard. But your doctor can work with you. Here are a couple of articles from Mayo Clinic that can help you prepare for your next discussion with your doctor.

I especially love the advice in the first article "Don't forget to dance!" 🙂
How are you doing with the decision making, @2025xyzmalinche?
