Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

My best friend and I, and my mom....same thing!!! my sister has had issues with her neck ... there's no injury reasons and she's a stay at home caretaker for her husband who had a partial stroke about 4 years ago.... so it's nothing SHE did!!
I saw a documentary where numerous doctors from all over the world have been finding, keeping, studying these "worm-like things" in peoples veins!! No explanations. They're all very perplexed. Google that!! It's creepy!!

@danny2022 I know it has been a while…

Did you ever get any relief from this affliction? I have had the same thing since 2020 and it has taken everything from me. Any time I have water or a meal I get this terrible mucus and it can change to a raw throat, etc. It goes on for hours and never fully goes away.

I have had countless laryngoscopy, EGDs, CT scans, swallow study, throat manometry, 24 hr ph, etc.

I have tried H1s, H2s, PPIs, nasal sprays, nasal rinses, etc., but nothing has worked.

It all started after my family had a virus in late February 2020 (we’ll never know if it was covid). We have had confirmed cases in ‘23 and ‘25 - and my throat still remains a huge issue. I would love to hear if anyone has found the genesis of this problem or at least some therapeutics.

After almost six years of this hell, I still can’t tell if it’s post nasal drip, some type of tracheal hypersecretion, or gastro - and neither can any of the doctors I’ve seen.

What helps: 1) Lose weight. 2) Stop smoking. 3) Stop drinking alcohol, even if only an occasional drinker. 4) Exercise. 5) Don't eat a lot all at once. 6) Get enough sleep. 7) Take vitamin C caps 3x/ day. 8) Take vitamins. 9) See a nutritionist. 10) Use an anti-histamine when you can't stand another minute of it. 11) I'm convinced nasal sprays can sometimes make things worse since if you let the squeeze bottle go while it inside your nostril, it draws in the bacteria from your nasal passages from the release of the squeeze. My doctor thought that might be true, and had never thought about it. If I ever need to use one, I will swab with alcohol the tip, let it dry, then spray, but NOT release the squeeze until it is out of my nostril and AWAY from me by some distance.

Hi @oly78. I dont recall reading your prior posts so hope this new suggestion to you. My daughter had me at her house and I ate freely. Later that night and next day terrible itching certain areas, thick white mucous, new or increased pain and pressure, and stomach issues. Before covid literally ate anything like jalapeños when pregnant. With keeping diary of food and body symptoms, verified now highly reactive to cumulative histamine in any food or drink
that antihistamines did not prevent🙃 Learning and modifying anything to lessen severity of reactions and symptoms was quite a journey so suggest starting with a trained nutritionist for this thru post covid clinic. Hope this may give any relief and quickest healing journey 🌈

@suefish thanks for reminding of my name on here. Wish that Long Covid would shrink and disappear.

@oly78 I am currently taking radiation for dysplasia on the larnx. After 4yrs of similar testing with severe mucus and hoarseness no diagnosis was made until the the hoarseness go worse went to another ENT and here I am. I feel anger that for 4 yrs no dr thought of my throat. I have 11 more treatments, I can' not eat solids, and no voice and pain is burning. I hope you find what is causing your symptoms. I have lost faith in the medical field but still believe is a complication from the covid shot. Good luck Danny I will keep you in my prayers.

Please see my posts elsewhere (if you can search them out) on N-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, or simply go ahead and buy some and take one 600 mg cap twice a day, morning and evening.

No dairy at all, no wheat (or other flours) at all, eat all the fruits, veggies, meats, mushrooms, berries and beans you want that you're not allergic to, as suggested above, for thirty days and see what hapopens. After that you might try re-introducing small amounts of one thing at a time back into your diet. Take commitment to change, and self-discipline, but the results are worth it - and you can do it!

I'd bet - and hope - that your post-nasal drip would all but disappear, and quit kicking off the bronchial irritation that drives excess mucous production and a host of other miseries, as it has for me.

Your chronic post-nasal and larynx issues might be benefitted greatly by simple diet and lifestyle changes. My overall health, going into another winter flu and upper respiratory infection season is much better and my resistance seems higher since making these changes. I hope the same proves true for you. Go for it! You can do this!

I have to be honest, with so many people having this issue, especially those that had no prior nasal or gastrointestinal symptoms, or LPR, and with clean examinations on multiple fronts, I wonder if any of this is actually neuropathy. I know the vagus nerve is consistently mentioned with issues stemming from long covid - it’s just so difficult to try to figure out why people would have globus sensations and other mucosal responses to eating stimuli and still have no real diagnostic confirmation. It really is an awful thing to suffer through.
