How do you manage the situation when periferal neuropathy affects your balance and walking ability?

I have learned where every hand hold in our house is . I look for them in unfamiliar places and use a walker.

@willgranger1127 I am the Imelda Markoff of the shoe world I consistently try different styles and so far tennis shoes are about the best ones. Hope that helps.

@magrose45 Imelda. Hey there. Yes on tennis shoes. I have on my Sketchers with Velcro fasteners now. I did get a half-size larger to keep them loose. My walking shoes are snug and supportive, but “strangle” my feet. Thank you!

After falling and landing in the ER with a head injury (which could have easily killed me) and two sprained ankles, we installed grab handles in the bathroom, the one step down into the living room, and the front and garage doors.

Please don’t ever let pride get in the way of using a cane or whatever you need to keep your balance. Falls are a leading cause of injury and death.

I have an Apple Watch with fall detection and it works. It went off when I fell. It’s waterproof so I wear it in the shower. If you don’t respond in the event of a fall it notifies your emergency contacts and emergency services.

I think everybody with our problem should be wearing one!! The same thing happened to me. I was home alone and fell and the firemen were there immediately.
Always have a key hidden outside or access so they can get in if you cannot get up.

@bettyg81pain Excellent point to bring up. Since my wife passed away earlier this year, living alone brings up challenges and I too got thinking about what if....how would someone get in. An outside lock box allows access to your home in the event of an emergency and give code to family members.

@bigal1956: Hi! I wish I had a cure I could suggest; however, I question if there is one. I have found lidocane type topicals very effective TEMPORARYILY! Some CBD creams, menthol based gels, Voleran cream, etc also give minimal amount of relief.
Balance and muscle/bone building exercise can help us from Falling! I do yoga (chair or floor) and am adding tai chi too! You may agree/disagree with my proactive approach, but then again you may see if this positively affects your neuropathy? We both know sitting on the couch doesn’t help! 🙂

@dbamos1945 your response is a good and accurate statement, there is no treatment or cure was the first thing my neurologist told me this is in England and from what I can understand it’s pretty much the same in the US. Like yourself I concentrate on keeping as fit as I can doing what I can as often as I can. Sitting on the sofa whilst is the easiest thing to do you get no benefit from it so yep I agree with your statement completely well said

I go barefoot a lot too. Walking in pine straw seems to help. I also tension my legs and flex my toes. Reminds me of Charles' Atlas Dynamic Tension. Another thing that seems to help is running the tips of my fingers over the soles of my feet with just the slightest touch. Think of a tiny pony galloping along the arches. They say that one cannot tickle one's self but this does for a short time, feels really good and costs nothing.
