Both my regular doctor and the pharmacist agreed that if it didn’t work on 50 mg, it wouldn’t. Sleep doctor never returned my call.
After being off Ambien for a month, I tried 5 mg last night and only got 4.5 hours of sleep. Will take 2.5 mg tonight and then be done with it. My doctor had suggested the half dose & no dose & full dose again, maybe no point in going back to full dose? I see him on Tuesday. I’d been on it for 15 years, but on lorazepam for the last month - 1mg or .5mg. The last 2 nights .5mg
Nothing seems to work for me anymore. Hydroxyzine made me an anxious. Lorazepam was very erratic.
I don’t want to keep trying new things.
One of my friends is having trouble with his sleep meds too. In fact, many people I know don’t sleep well with them. And many people I know don’t sleep well without them.
@berekann Something seems off.....you mentioned you tried 50mg. Trazodone for one night and it didn't help . Both your doctor and pharmacist said if 50mg. for ONE NIGHT didn't work it will never work. They never tried upping the dose??? Please, ask again or find a new doctor. Trazedone has changed my life.
thank you - I see my "regular" doctor on Tuesday and will discuss with him.
right now, I'm planning to stop sleep meds altogether - they only give me side effects, and rarely a good night's sleep. Hopefully then I'll sleep better and longer. And feel much better overall. . .
With the 50 mg of Trazodone, it didn't kick in for 2-1/2 hours, and I only got about 5 hours of sleep. Felt miserable the next day. Not especially interested in going thru that again, with higher dose it could be worse?
Hydroxyzine which many people like, made me anxious and agitated, and I only got 3 hours of sleep. Lorazepam is very erratic - some nights good, others not. Ambien only gives me 4 hours of sleep, if that much. Used to work!
I appreciate your input -
I tried 1 trazadone ( 50 mg)= nothing; 2 traz. = nothing.
So finally 2 & 1/2... so 125 mg. works like a charm for me.
My physician said I could take up to 3 but that did make me too
sleepy the next day.
Hope you find what works for you.
Not sleeping is the worst. k

@mmwagner46 I have taken Trazadone for years for sleep issues. I was initially prescribed 100-200 mg at night. I used to have to take 100 mg at night. I now only take 50mg at night and I sleep well. I agree with you!
I have experienced a serotonin storm using Prozac that kept me up for 4 days...thought death was too easy! Even though Trazodone is not an SSRI it still has an effect on serotonin. It would take a patient physician's explanation to assure me that I would not have a repeat event....it was Awful!!! But I have been sleepless for over 8 months getting about 4 1/2 - 5 hours a sleep a nite. Wonder when sleep deprivation psychosis will begin. I am so very tired. I initiate sleep with 2 mg of alprazolam it's the staying asleep or falling back to sleep that is the killer! Have a sleep apnea home study scheduled but I doubt seriously that that is the issue. The "sleep dr" gave me a script for trazodone in spite of what I had told him so it's still at the pharmacy.
You may not have any side effects from Tranzadone yet but you will. This drug has negative effects on your brain function when used for an extended period of time. Do your research and talk with your doctor.
Doctors do love to prescribe drugs! I’ve been rx’d hydroxyzine, trazodone, lorazepam and Doxepin by different doctors in the last 2 months. Didn’t even fill the Doxepin, just tapered off lorazepam and now back to Ambien which I plan to taper. See my regular doctor tomorrow. He’s the one who prescribed Lorazepam because the Ambien wasn’t working & I had insomnia anxiety. He was on vacation when the lorazepam RX was due to run out, so I saw an associate Doctor who wanted me off of it and to try the Doxepin, And talk to my doctor about going on the Ambien again. But why had another med especially if it was only for six days? So I do understand what you’re going through, Although I’m getting erratic sleep. Good luck
What are the negative effects on your brain with trazedone ??
Did a physician tell you that or did you read it somewhere or......??
Would that not depend on the person??
I was recently started on Trazadone 50mg then upped to 100 and eventually 150. I still wake up every two hours and don’t sleep at all after 4:30. I stopped taking it as I had side effects ( balance off, blurred vision) so now take nothing. I’ve been on Rozerem and Belsomra and nothing really helps. I’m 78 so concerned about any risk to memory. Any advice?
@berekann Trazedone 150mg has worked wonders for me and I sleep about 7 hours through the night. TRY IT!
