I have debilitating insomnia issues where I cannot sleepFor 4-10 night

I have debilitating insomnia issues at 75 years of age. I have had these my adult life., it is so debilitating that I cannot even drive my car or go about my daily routines because my head is spinning around and I feel like I’m literally drunk intoxicated, however, I am not
I have been given every drug by a different doctors along the way and each one of them has had major side effects, including Ambien. I just want to know I’m not the only one who is sitting up night after night after night in my bed crying because I cannot shut my brain down. I have had some thoughts of suicide lately because I get so sad about the situation that I cannot control.

How tired are you when you go to sleep?

In other words, how much physical activity do you do during the day?

If you sit around all day, you're essentially resting. Thus your body isn't ready for more rest.

Learned this with my kids: They need physical activity so that they can sleep at night. Started doing it for myself (e.g. trying to keep up with them), and I sleep better. Keeping up with the routine with the grand kids.

Caveat: Don't exercise 1-2 hours before going to bed as your body will still be in an elevated state and has not transitioned to a calm, sleep ready state.

So sorry - I understand.
Have you tried CBT-I for insomnia ?

I've had the same issues. Living in California I had 3 different doctors tell me to use CBD with a low dose of THC. I don't take enough to get high and it really helps. I am concerned though that my memory might be affect by it. But seriously, my memory and cognitive were way more affected every day by my sleep deprivation, not to mention my energy and immune function and I am finally losing some weight. I have to wonder why they didn't do any further testing after a sleep study. I'd love to be able to sleep without it

Note on Caffeine: People react differently to it. Some it has minimal effect, other strong & slow. It on the top 10 list of allergies.

Caffeine takes 4-7 hours to get "into the blood stream" and be effective. The takes 7-11 hours to be removed. It's usually the sugar & amendments to the coffee that wake a person up the first hours.

That means that for some, that morning coffee is the reason they can't sleep at night.

Also watch out as some medicines add caffeine to heighten the body's response to the drug.

I am exactly there with you. I am 57, hold a full time job (thank god mainly remote - because I do not sleep enough to drive half the time) I have had to push through multiple projects this week on zero sleep (have not slept in 5 days) and I take care of my granddaughter one day on the weekends. Debilitating insomnia - 20+ years. Severe rebound insomnia when I run out of meds. I've been on everything. Have to get away from the Ambien. Only have trazadone - pretty worthless. I want to cry. It makes me angry. I get extremely agitated, sensitive to light and noise. Can barely interact with people - I feel like they all think I am crazy. No one understands insomnia. I feel like I'm dying sometimes. Body flooded with cortisol from not sleeping, and the elevated cortisol makes it impossible to sleep. It makes me rageful at the world (and everyone who can sleep), and very depressed - about my life, about my future. I have so many goals - so much I want to do - offer the world and contribute- everything is impacted by my inability to sleep. I exercise - have used CBD, have been in CBT. All of it. Numerous sleep specialists. The mind is a powerful thing.

I’m truly sorry for you and what is happening, I read so many stories about people who have insomnia and the suffering that it causes. I noticed you said that this has been going on for most of your adult life and that you’ve tried many different medications with no success, I feel that you need much more help than what you have been given so far, perhaps you can ask your doctor to get you in with a sleep therapist and also sign up for sleep monitoring and extensive tests to see what is needed for your sleep health. I’ve known people who went through this and they were able to get help once they found the problem because there’s many different reasons why you can’t sleep. I also learned that insomnia is not the same for everyone, some people fall asleep but wake up shortly afterwards and can’t get back to sleep, others have said they don’t fall asleep at all, it’s a very difficult thing to cope with but don’t give up on getting the right treatment or medication to help you get your sleep, best wishes to you.

Obviously (like me) if she has been on Ambien and numerous sleep meds she has a history of sleep specialist treatment.

I am so sorry for your suffering. I have had insomnia off and on my entire life since childhood due to abuse. At 72 I have been using "sleep hygiene" practices for at least five years, fish oil capsules, melatonin and magnesium glycinate (most easily absorbed) a cool dark room, all social media off except "sleep stories" from Spotify and other apps. Several months ago my doctor put me on Rx Trazodone and went from waking 2-7 times a night and sleeping an average of 5 or less hours a night to waking once or twice and averaging 7 hours at night. Please get into a therapy group or individual therapy and do see a sleep specialist for advice, you are worthy of living a complete life without all the pain this is putting you through!

@eryanfrank Iam curious what kind of “further testing “ you would be looking for, after the sleep study? To my knowledge, the sleep study IS the testing. I am not aware of anything else. If the sleep study showed no signs of serious issues such as sleep apneas or narcolepsy or other serious health problems, then there’s nothing left to test for. We would all love to be able to sleep without having to take anything to aid us but if we could do that, then we wouldn’t have insomnia. We would be sleeping like so called “ normal people”
Unfortunately there is not yet a cure for insomnia and most often the medical community has no idea what is causing it. Be glad that CBD with THC works for you! Lots of people, myself included, have not found anything that is consistently effective.
