my WBC is a 2. I was just diagnosed with AML . waiting on 2 more test results. May need a bone marrow transplant. can you start meds right away. and can chemo help.?
I saw my primary Dr in June for a bug bite, She did blood work. my numbers are good. but CBC low RBC enlarged. this all so difficult to understand. where do start? Tennessee oncology. is where I'm going. my Dr. seems very smart. wife mother and gonna

Hi @debrasue, welcome to Mayo Connect. Being newly diagnosed with AML I know you have a ton of questions. I’m here with answers for you, along with many of us who have had AML and some have gone on to have a bone marrow transplant. That was my story from 6 years ago. I’m healthy, no sign of disease and living my best 2nd life after my treatment for AML and bone marrow transplant.

With the other tests you’re having done I’m assuming the doctors will be checking for genetic mutations which may be the underlying cause for the AML. Those test results will determine the type of treatment that will be required.

To answer your question about chemo/treatments. Yes, meds would be started right away in order to get the proliferating leukemic cells under control. Chemo does help.
However, with some specific mutations chemo and a bone marrow transplant may be suggested. But first your hematologist/oncologist will be waiting on the results from your tests. Was there also a bone marrow biopsy done?
