Trazadone

Has anyone had good luck with Trazedone? I have been using Zolpidem ER (Ambian) for years and it's effectiveness is gone.

Why are you yelling at me? I was answering the question wenron8062 asked saying what they were told about TylenolPM. The they was whomever told them that. They wanted to know why someone would say that, I just told her. We were talking about dementia not liver disease from high dosages. If you want to know where it came from feel free to google it. I read it ages ago. NIH, Harvard Health, Scientific American, etc… I’m sure you can find it there.

There has been a variety of studies that show Benadryl leads to dementia. There have been studies that say lorazepam does and Ambien does but there are also studies that say the opposite.

I tried trazodone one night, 50 mg and it did not work but others take 150 to 250 mg and say they sleep great I’ve been on lorazepam for three weeks and it works so erratically that I’m going back to Ambien. I see my doctor tomorrow, but I’m taking it tonight. Just don’t want another sleepless one.
Ambien had stopped working well for me, but I’ve been off it for a month so I’m hoping at least for one night it will work

I appreciate your in-depth reply and suggestions. I've never heard of some of the names you've mentioned. I'll research and hopefully give a few a go! Presently, I've added a melatonin chewable to my evening Zolpidem ER. I fall asleep within minutes, but typically only lasts 4-5 hours. I'll try anything legitimate and legal ! of course with my doctor's authorization.

Have you seen a sleep specialist? There are many strategies, medications, and supplements that could possibly work for you. After struggling with sleep for years, and researching benzodiazepines (I was on lorazepam which my pcp wanted me off of) I have found a medication that works, low dose of mirtazapine.
I have friends who swear by gummies, ashwaganda, magnesium glycinate. the key is finding something that works for you.
Good luck!

I have not been to a sleep specialist. My neurologist is retiring at the end of October. I'll be seeing him before then. I'll ask him about a sleep specialist. I appreciate your taking the time to provide input.

kndaustin71, what are "scheduled" drugs? I mean, what does that mean? You say that lorazepam and xanax ( which is Alprazolam) are not long-acting. But you are taking Xanax (alprazolam), 2 1/2 to 3mg a day. I take 1.5 mg of lorazepam, but not all at once. At bedtime, I take magnesium glycinate and .75 of lorazepam. Then the first time I wake up to go to bathroom (usually around 2am or 3am) I take .5 more, and then the next time I wake up... around 5 or 6am, I take the final .25mg. Have you tried that? Or maybe you're sleeping good already....and not waking up in the early am. I just don't get why the government wants to shutdown benzos. I believe it's because they work very well, and therefore they have the most potential for abuse. Don't punish us people who use them responsibly!

Hopefully this article will better explain what Scheduled Drugs are and how they are categorized. For instance, I am on Alprazolam (generic for Xanax) and by Federal Law must have a face to face visit with my physician and a drug screen every three months before he can renew my prescription. There are meticulous records kept by the pharmacy by law and a physicians name can be flagged if it is noted that he/she is writing too many prescriptions for the drugs, also the patient can be identified however that information is covered under HIPPA.
That's why the physicians do not want to be involved in writing scripts for Scheduled Drugs and many times at the expense of the patients well-being for those that will use the drug responsibly and not sell/share with other people. I would venture to say that abuse of benzodiazipines is far less than that of opioids particularly fentanyl. Typical example of the government cookie cutting the drug issues.

@berekann I've been taking 150mg Trazodone for over 10 years with absolutely no side effects. Why not have your dr. up the dosage?

I tried - I left two phone messages with the medical assistant, and no reply.
Saw a doctor in my regular doctor's office yesterday, as he is on vacation, and she agreed that it didn't seem to work for me. She did tell me to taper off the lorazepam, which was the main reason I made the appt and prescribed Doxepin; said to discuss going back on Ambien when I see my regular doctor next week. After reading about it, I decided not to take it - why add something new to my body? Will resume the Ambien. I've only been on 1 mg Lorazepam for 25 days, with several 1/2 tab doses and one night of trazodone, so minimum tapering seems adequate; the pharmacist concurred. Thanks for your interest! not going back to the sleep specialist who prescribed trazodone, perhaps obviously!!

@berekann one night on Trazodone?????

Both my regular doctor and the pharmacist agreed that if it didn’t work on 50 mg, it wouldn’t. Sleep doctor never returned my call.
After being off Ambien for a month, I tried 5 mg last night and only got 4.5 hours of sleep. Will take 2.5 mg tonight and then be done with it. My doctor had suggested the half dose & no dose & full dose again, maybe no point in going back to full dose? I see him on Tuesday. I’d been on it for 15 years, but on lorazepam for the last month - 1mg or .5mg. The last 2 nights .5mg
Nothing seems to work for me anymore. Hydroxyzine made me an anxious. Lorazepam was very erratic.
I don’t want to keep trying new things.
One of my friends is having trouble with his sleep meds too. In fact, many people I know don’t sleep well with them. And many people I know don’t sleep well without them.

@mmwagner46 and I’m really glad it works so well for you! Same for my neighbors and another friend. I’m truly scared to try anything else now
