kawanhee, Trazodone is just as addictive as a benzodiazepine. Have you read any of the stories on here of people who are addicted to Trazodone and have lots of problems trying to get off of it? Mirtazapine is probably the same way... I will happily take Lorazepam and Amitriptyline to get the sleep I need. My doctor knows I will need these meds for the rest of my life. Sleep is SUPER IMPORTANT.... and whatever you need to do to get it, is worth it in my opinion. There are many people out there (on this chat line) who struggle with getting sleep, and are not given the chance to try Lorazepam or another benzo that could give them relief! And a solution to their sleepless nights. I feel SO BAD for these people. I've heard SSRI's are addictive too. And they don't work for many people. You're lucky Mirtazapine works for you. It did not work for me. But neither did Ambien, Trazodone, Lunesta, and a few others. Lorazepam works great for both my issues. Sleep and Anxiety. I also take Amitriptyline which helps as well for many issues. I also take Magnesium glycinate at bedtime. I will continue to argue for people's right to take this medication. Most doctors won't prescribe it, unfortunately. Hopefully someday more doctors will prescribe Lorazepam for people who have tried everything for sleep and nothing works. Hospitals will give Lorazepam to people for sleep or anxiety. Flurazepam was the BEST sleep med.... and for some reason, they stopped manufacturing it. But yet they keep making Oxycodone and Oxycontin, which are far more dangerous. Not too many people abuse sleep meds. They just want to get their sleep. I am very passionate about this subject and will continue to fight for benzodiazepines. Even doctors know they are simply they are the only meds that will work for some people. But unfortunately alot of them have been brainwashed into believing that benzos are terrible. Hope that changes someday.
I totally agree with you. However, the Drs have not been brainwashed they have had their hands tied by the government and the use of scheduled drugs. Flurazepam was probable one on the best under the brand name Dalmane. It was a long acting benzo (7-8 hrs.) Temazepam is as well. The problem with xanax and lorazapam is that they are not long acting and tend to wear off and one awakens in the early am and can't get back to sleep. The medical profession advocates strongly as you age the most important things for you to do is have a good balanced diet, get plenty of exercise and sleep! Well Duh! I have been on Alprazolam for over 15 years and never take more that 2 1/2- 3 mg per day. I use it for panic/terror attacks and sleep. Used responsibly you don't develop a strong addiction and can wean easily with no side effects as I have in the past.
A wise decision! I used to use it regularly but won't anymore. You might be interested in knowing that there is an ACB list. It lists drugs that may contribute to Dementia. You can google it.
Who is "THEY"? Tylenol in greater than 4 gm per day can cause liver damage that is not reversible. I would prefer to see bona fide reseaarch through reputable institutions. Too many times people will read Yahoo and then swear by the medical advice. It's amazing that with all the Big Pharma that we have that no one can produce a sleep aid that is suitable.
Why are you yelling at me? I was answering the question wenron8062 asked saying what they were told about TylenolPM. The they was whomever told them that. They wanted to know why someone would say that, I just told her. We were talking about dementia not liver disease from high dosages. If you want to know where it came from feel free to google it. I read it ages ago. NIH, Harvard Health, Scientific American, etc… I’m sure you can find it there.

kndaustin71, what are "scheduled" drugs? I mean, what does that mean? You say that lorazepam and xanax ( which is Alprazolam) are not long-acting. But you are taking Xanax (alprazolam), 2 1/2 to 3mg a day. I take 1.5 mg of lorazepam, but not all at once. At bedtime, I take magnesium glycinate and .75 of lorazepam. Then the first time I wake up to go to bathroom (usually around 2am or 3am) I take .5 more, and then the next time I wake up... around 5 or 6am, I take the final .25mg. Have you tried that? Or maybe you're sleeping good already....and not waking up in the early am. I just don't get why the government wants to shutdown benzos. I believe it's because they work very well, and therefore they have the most potential for abuse. Don't punish us people who use them responsibly!
I was prescribed 50 mg of trazodone. Supposed to work in 30 to 60 minutes. I was still awake after 2 1/2 hours and ended up with only five hours of sleep so back to lorazepam, which I’ve been taking for three weeks. Ambien has stopped working for me maybe after a two month break it will work again according to what I’ve read online.

royanthony, I know the struggle to sleep very well. Was taking over the counter benadryl for many years until it stopped working. Then took Flurazepam which worked excellent, until they quit making it! Then the search was on to find something else to help me sleep. Tried Ambien, Trazodone, Lunesta and a few others....I had been taking Valium (diazepam) occasionally for anxiety, which worked great,... but didn't really help me sleep. So finally my doctor had me quit the Valium and said he was prescribing me 1 medication for both my issues, sleep and anxiety. He prescribed Lorazepam. And it works! I added 30mg of Amitriptyline for my mild depression and it also helps sleep and anxiety. I take 1.5mg Lorazepam a night, and no longer need an anxiety med for daytime. Have you ever tried over the counter Unisom? It has to have the ingredient Doxylamine though. Try it if u haven't. Works really good for an over the counter sleep aide. Good luck!
I appreciate your in-depth reply and suggestions. I've never heard of some of the names you've mentioned. I'll research and hopefully give a few a go! Presently, I've added a melatonin chewable to my evening Zolpidem ER. I fall asleep within minutes, but typically only lasts 4-5 hours. I'll try anything legitimate and legal ! of course with my doctor's authorization.
